Frequently Asked Questions

After completing the preparation for the poojan, pandit begins the poojan by reciting all the mantras mentioned in the hindu holy texts and customs. The person performing the asthi visarjan is requested to recite some of the mantras as told by the pandit. During this procedure, poojan samagri is offered to the asthi kalash. Before the immersion of asthis in ganga river, pandit ji asks the almighty to accept the poojan and provide moksha to the departed.

There are different days in different castes and states. Generally, it is best to perform it as soon as possible. Asthi visarjan laws are different in Orissa, when compared to north india. But as per the holy texts, the asthis must be collected and put in a kalash on the 3rd day, 7th day, 9th day. Before the 10th day, asthi visarjan should be performed.

The poojan takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 120 minutes.

You should never keep the asthi inside your home. Rather, you should bury the asthi kalash in your garden, nearby empty land area or a patio.

Any nearby place where holy river ganga flows. For people living in or near Delhi, they can go Garh Mukteshwar or Haridwar. For People belonging to Northern India, they can visit Prayagraj, Varanasi or Mathura.

No, although river ganga is considered to be the most preferred when it comes to asthi visarjan, but any flowing water body is suitable for asthi visarjan.

Yes, if you are unable to visit physically, you can opt for online asthi visarjan. It is completely fine and is considered the preferred choice for many.

Why is Ujjain significant for Asthi Visarjan?

Ujjain is one of the seven Moksha Kshetras (Avantika) — the sacred cities where liberation is guaranteed by scripture. The holy Shipra (Kshipra) River flows through Ujjain and is considered one of Hinduism's sacred rivers, making its waters inherently purifying for ancestral rites.

Ujjain's significance for Asthi Visarjan is rooted in its association with Lord Mahakal (Shiva as the lord of time and death). The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga — the only south-facing Jyotirlinga in India — presides over Ujjain, and performing ancestral rites in the shadow of Mahakal is believed to grant the departed soul direct liberation from the cycle of time.

Additionally, the Siddhavat tree on the Shipra banks is one of three sacred immortal trees in India (alongside Akshayavat at Prayagraj and Vanshivat at Vrindavan). Lord Rama is believed to have performed Pitra Tarpan for Raja Dashrath at Siddhavat, making it a scripturally endorsed site for ancestral offerings.

Where in Ujjain is Asthi Visarjan performed?

Asthi Visarjan in Ujjain is performed at two primary sacred sites on the Shipra River:

Ram Ghat — The most famous and important ghat in Ujjain, located near the heart of the city. Ram Ghat is the site of the daily Shipra Aarti (evening river ceremony) and the primary ghat for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Asthi Visarjan here carries the combined merit of the Shipra's sacred waters and the centuries of devotional energy accumulated at this ghat.

Siddhavat Temple Ghat — Located further along the Shipra, Siddhavat is the sacred immortal banyan tree where Lord Rama performed ancestral rites for his father Dashrath. This site is specifically associated with Shradh, Pind Daan, and Asthi Visarjan. Many families consider Siddhavat the more scripturally appropriate site for ancestral rites, while Ram Ghat is preferred for general pilgrim bathing and daily worship.

Prayag Pandits arranges ceremonies at both ghats with experienced local Teerth Purohits who specialize in Ujjain's ancestral rite traditions.

What is Siddhavat and why is it sacred for ancestral rites in Ujjain?

Siddhavat is an ancient immortal banyan tree (vat vriksha) on the banks of the Shipra River in Ujjain. It is one of three sacred immortal trees in the Hindu tradition — the other two being Akshayavat at Prayagraj and Vanshivat at Vrindavan.

According to the Skanda Purana and local tradition, Lord Rama performed Pitra Tarpan (ancestral water offerings) for his father King Dashrath under the Siddhavat tree. Since that event, Siddhavat has been considered one of the holiest sites in India for Shradh, Pind Daan, and Asthi Visarjan. The merit of performing ancestral rites at Siddhavat is said to be equivalent to performing them at the Akshayavat in Prayagraj.

The tree stands within a temple complex on the Shipra banks, with dedicated platforms for performing the Asthi Visarjan ceremony. Local Teerth Purohits maintain the tradition of conducting ancestral rites here throughout the year, with particular activity during Pitrupaksha and Simhastha years.

When is the best time for Asthi Visarjan in Ujjain?

Asthi Visarjan at Ujjain can be performed throughout the year. The most significant periods are:

Pitrupaksha (September–October) — The 16-day ancestral rites period carries the highest merit for Asthi Visarjan at Ujjain's Shipra ghats, as at all tirthas across India.

Simhastha Kumbh Mela years — Ujjain hosts the Kumbh Mela (Simhastha) every 12 years when Jupiter enters Leo. The next Simhastha is expected around 2028. Performing Asthi Visarjan during Simhastha multiplies the spiritual merit exponentially.

Amavasya (new moon) and Somvati Amavasya (Monday new moon) are traditionally powerful days for ancestral offerings at the Shipra.

October to March is the most comfortable season for visiting Ujjain. Summers (April–June) can exceed 40°C. The monsoon (July–September) is warm and humid but the Shipra has strong water flow.

Can a daughter, wife, or woman perform Asthi Visarjan?

Yes, a daughter, wife, daughter-in-law, or other female relative can perform Asthi Visarjan when a son is unavailable. Scriptural texts restrict bone collection by lineage (kula) rather than by gender — the performer must belong to the mother's or father's family line. The Garuda Purana and later Smritis explicitly acknowledge female participation when the male line is absent. We regularly guide daughters, wives, and granddaughters through the complete Asthi Visarjan ceremony at Prayagraj, Varanasi, Haridwar, and Gaya. The ritual's spiritual efficacy is identical regardless of the performer's gender, provided the correct gotra, sankalpa, and mantras are invoked.

How soon after death should Asthi Visarjan be performed?

Hindu tradition recommends performing Asthi Visarjan as early as possible — ideally within the first year after death. The ashes should be collected on the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 9th day after cremation. If circumstances prevented earlier immersion, the ritual can still be performed years later and remains fully valid. Do not let the passage of time stop you from fulfilling this duty.
