The Manusmriti names pind-daan a foundational pitri-yajna. The Mahabharata Vana Parva names the Brij-Ganga among the Gangetic tirthas where pinda rites carry merit; Vayu Purana names Gaya as the canonical pind-daan tirtha. Garh-Mukteshwar — anchored on the Mukteshwar temple — is the closest accessible alternative for Delhi-NCR families.

What's included
We've seen too many families face hidden boat fees, samagri costs, and "dakshina" pressure on the day. Here's exactly what's covered, and what isn't.
Included
Tirth Purohit qualified in the Garh-Mukteshwar pind-daan vidhi, with gotra-pravara verified. The Brahmins of the Brij-Ganga ghat lineage carry the Vedic instruction required for proper pind-daan Sankalpa, pinda consecration, and pitru-tarpan recitation per the Garuda Purana Pretakalpa.
Included
Pinda dough prepared from sesame, barley flour, and kusha — formed and consecrated in advance, with the gotra-pravara of the departed recited before the family arrives at the Brij-Ganga ghat.
Included
Til, kusha, gangajal, kalash, white cloth, dhoop, sandalwood — all the materials prescribed for the pind-daan vidhi, prepared in advance and ready before the family arrives at the ghat.
Included
Optional upgrades: Brij-Ganga boat upgrade carrying the pinda offering to the central Ganga current (extra), Mukteshwar temple darshan as the closing devotional act, Deep Daan (lamp offering) bundle as add-on for the in-person variant — the online package already includes Deep Daan at no extra cost. Combined pind-daan + shradh + asthi-visarjan day-trip packages available for families completing multiple ancestral rites on the same visit.
Included
One person on WhatsApp through your entire booking — fluent in Hindi, English, and major regional languages — before and after the ceremony.
Included*
WhatsApp message from the pandit the same evening of the ceremony, with details of all pind-daan offerings made on your behalf and the pitru-tarpan completed.
Not included
Road travel (3-4 hours from Delhi NCR via NH-9 / Eastern Peripheral Expressway). No direct rail/air — closest rail is Garh Junction; closest airport is Delhi IGI. We can recommend trusted operators for the day-trip itinerary.
Not included*
Most families perform Garh-Mukteshwar pind-daan as a same-day trip from Delhi NCR — the proximity advantage is the city's practical-accessibility value. Stay-inclusive options available on request for families coming from outside the NCR region.
Not included
We coordinate the pind-daan vidhi on this page. The sibling rites at the same Brij-Ganga ghat are coordinated through our /shradh-in-garh-mukteshwar/ and /asthi-visarjan-in-garh-mukteshwar/ pages. Combined-rite day-trip packages available on request.

Same day
When to perform
The Garuda Purana Pretakalpa prescribes pind-daan during Pitrupaksha (the 15-16 day fortnight in Ashwina Krishna Paksha — Sep 26 → Oct 10, 2026), every Amavasya, on the death-anniversary tithi, and on Sankranti days. At Garh-Mukteshwar — the primary Brij-area Gangetic pind-daan tirtha, named in the Mahabharata Vana Parva's Tirthayatra catalogue and anchored on the Mukteshwar temple — the rite carries the universal Ganga-water purification merit (Padma / Agni Purana doctrine) combined with the practical-accessibility of a same-day Delhi-NCR trip. Garh-Mukteshwar is not in the moksha trinity, and Vayu Purana names Gaya as the canonical pind-daan tirtha — for the highest single-verse Mahatmya merit, see our pind-daan pages for Gaya, Prayagraj, Varanasi, or Haridwar.
Performed by Tirth Purohits at Triveni Sangam since 2019
Two ways to perform
Performed by your own hands at the Brij-Ganga ghat under a Garh-Mukteshwar Tirth Purohit — pandit recites the pind-daan vidhi mantras and gotra-pravara; the karta offers the pinda and the pitru-tarpan personally. Deep Daan (lamp offering) available as add-on. Optional Mukteshwar temple darshan as the closing devotional act.
Starts at ₹7,100
For families abroad or unable to travel. Sankalpa + gotra-pravara recited remotely; the purohit, acting as Pratinidhi (authorised proxy per Angirasa Smriti + Nirnaya Sindhu Pratinidhi-nirnayah), performs the pind-daan at the Brij-Ganga ghat with live video proof. Deep Daan (lamp offering) included at no extra cost as a same-Tirth-Purohit bundle. Gangajal couriered to the family after the rite.
Starts at ₹7,100

Garh-Mukteshwar is the primary Brij-area Gangetic pind-daan tirtha — the closest major Ganga ghat for families in Delhi-NCR, Western UP, Haryana, and the Brij belt. The Mahabharata Vana Parva, in its Tirthayatra Parva, names the broader Brij-Ganga stretch among the Gangetic tirthas where pinda rites carry merit. The city is named after the Mukteshwar temple ("Mukteshwar" = lord of liberation), the central anchor of the local Shaiva tradition. Honest framing: the Vayu Purana names Gaya as the canonical pind-daan tirtha; Garh-Mukteshwar is the regional accessibility alternative for families who cannot travel to Gaya — different Mahatmya profile, both canonically valid. The accessibility advantage matters most for the annual Tithi-pind and monthly Amavasya pind-daan that families perform across years.
The eldest son holds the first authority to perform pind-daan with Sankalpa and pinda offering per the Manusmriti Pitri-yajna section. After marriage, the son performs the rite with his wife. If the eldest son is deceased, the younger son carries out the pind-daan. In the absence of a son, the grandson (son's son); in the absence of male issue, the brother; if the departed had only daughters, the daughter's son holds the right. In modern practice, when no male issue is available, daughters and daughters-in-law perform the full rite under Tirth Purohit guidance and the rite is fully valid per the Angirasa Smriti and Nirnaya Sindhu Pratinidhi-nirnayah on Pratinidhi Karma.
Pind-daan at Garh-Mukteshwar is performed at the Brij-Ganga ghat — the city's main ancestral-rite location on the Ganga banks. The Mukteshwar temple, from which the city takes its name, is the central darshan-anchor; many families combine the pind-daan with a Mukteshwar temple darshan before or after the ghat rite. The pinda is consecrated with the gotra-pravara recitation, offered with the prescribed mantras, and then carried to the central Ganga current (boat upgrade available) or released at the ghat. The pitru-tarpan follows in three directions per Baudhayana.
The Garuda Purana Pretakalpa prescribes pind-daan during four primary windows: (1) Pitrupaksha — the 15-16 day fortnight in Ashwina Krishna Paksha (Sep 26 → Oct 10, 2026), with Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Mahalaya, Oct 10) as the closing universal-ancestors day. (2) Monthly Amavasya. (3) The annual death-anniversary Tithi. (4) Sankranti days. Garh-Mukteshwar's practical accessibility makes the recurring Pitrupaksha and Amavasya rites more sustainable for Delhi-NCR families than travelling to Gaya. We recommend booking 2-3 weeks in advance during Pitrupaksha as ghat coordination is dense.
Three related but doctrinally distinct rites at the same Brij-Ganga ghat. Pind Daan is the pinda-offering rite — the offering of consecrated pinda dough (sesame + barley + kusha) for the preta's transit per the Garuda Purana Pretakalpa. Shradh is the broader annual ancestral institution — tarpan + dakshina + Brahmin Bhoj. Asthi Visarjan is the one-time post-cremation rite — immersion of the collected bones in the Ganga. At Garh-Mukteshwar, all three rites are performed at the Brij-Ganga ghat by the same Tirth Purohit lineage; many Delhi-NCR families combine the rites in a single day-trip. See our Shradh at Garh-Mukteshwar and Asthi Visarjan at Garh-Mukteshwar pages for the sibling rites.
Deep Daan is the votive lamp-offering rite — lighting a lamp (deepa) at the Ganga ghat with the prescribed mantras, dedicated to the ancestors. The Padma Purana names Deep Daan among the most meritorious offerings, alongside pind, anna (food), and vastra (cloth). At Garh-Mukteshwar, Deep Daan carries particular significance during Kartik Mahina (the lunar month of Kartik, Oct-Nov) when the entire Brij belt observes Deep Daan as part of Karthik Snaan. Why bundled with online Pind Daan only: the online product is performed by a Brij-Ganga Tirth Purohit on the karta's behalf via Pratinidhi Karma, and Deep Daan is added at no extra cost as a same-purohit value-add (the same purohit lights the lamp during the online ceremony). The in-person product is performed by the karta's own hands, so Deep Daan is an optional add-on rather than a bundled inclusion — families can request Deep Daan during the in-person ceremony at a small additional samagri cost.
Families do NOT need to bring the pinda samagri themselves. All materials — sesame, barley flour, kusha, gangajal, kalash, white cloth, dhoop, sindoor, sandalwood — are prepared in advance at the Brij-Ganga ghat by our Tirth Purohit team and ready before the family arrives. The pinda dough is consecrated with the gotra-pravara of the departed before the ceremony begins. Families need only bring themselves, the departed's ancestral names (up to three generations of paternal lineage), and the gotra. For families who prefer to bring family-specific samagri (heirloom cloth, a particular kalash), this is welcome — coordinate via WhatsApp before the visit.
Yes. Online Pind Daan is performed by a Brij-Ganga Tirth Purohit at the Garh-Mukteshwar ghat with live video proof — the karta recites Sankalpa remotely (over Zoom or WhatsApp), the purohit recites the gotra-pravara on the karta's behalf, and the purohit, acting as Pratinidhi (authorised proxy), offers the consecrated pinda and performs the pitru-tarpan in three directions per Baudhayana. Deep Daan (lamp offering) is included in the online package at no extra cost as a same-Tirth-Purohit value-add — see the dedicated Deep Daan Q for context. Gangajal is couriered to the family after the rite. The Angirasa Smriti and the Nirnaya Sindhu (Pratinidhi-nirnayah, citing Skanda Purana and Katyayana) describe Pratinidhi Karma as fully valid when physical presence is impossible. Online Pind Daan + Deep Daan at Garh-Mukteshwar is priced at ₹7,100 — same as the in-person variant despite the bundled Deep Daan.
Gaya is the canonical pind-daan tirtha per the Vayu Purana Gaya Mahatmya — the Mahatmya names the canonical pind-daan vedis in single-verse texts (see our dedicated detailed FAQ below for the vedi-level explanation). Gaya carries the highest Mahatmya merit and is the doctrinally first-rank choice for the once-in-a-lifetime Gaya-Shradh visit that Hindu families traditionally undertake. Garh-Mukteshwar is the regional accessibility choice: 3-4 hours from Delhi NCR vs Gaya's 12-15 hour rail journey, making the recurring annual pitru-yajna cycle sustainable rather than aspirational. We recommend Gaya for the headline once-in-a-lifetime visit and Garh-Mukteshwar for the ongoing pitru-rite calendar. See our Pind Daan in Gaya page for the canonical Mahatmya alternative.
The pinda is a small consecrated dough ball prepared at the ghat by the Tirth Purohit team from three Vedic ingredients: sesame seeds (til) — for purification and pitri-tradition; barley flour (jau) — the grain offered to ancestors since Vedic times per the Pitri Sukta; and kusha grass (darbha) — the sacred grass used in all Vedic rites for its purifying property. Gangajal binds the mixture. The Sankalpa names the karta, the gotra, and three generations of paternal ancestors (plus one maternal generation in some traditions); the pinda is consecrated with the gotra-pravara recitation. After the offering, the pinda is released into the Brij-Ganga current with the prescribed mantras — the Ganga carries the pinda's merit to the pitri-loka per the Garuda Purana Pretakalpa. The physical release is by the karta's own hand (in-person variant) or by the purohit's hand acting as Pratinidhi (online variant).
Both choices are valid; the answer depends on the family's circumstances. If you can undertake the once-in-a-lifetime Gaya-Shradh visit — typically a 3-4 day pilgrimage with Phalgu darshan and the broader Gaya vedi circuit — Gaya is the traditionally first-rank choice for a first pind-daan because of its canonical Mahatmya register. If logistics prevent the Gaya visit — recent bereavement, health considerations, NRI distance, or extended-family scheduling complexity — the dharmashastra tradition is clear that pind-daan at any valid Gangetic tirtha (including Brij-Ganga) is fully scripturally efficacious. The Manusmriti and Garuda Purana Pretakalpa do not require Gaya specifically; they require any valid tirtha + correct Sankalpa + qualified pandit. We do not advise families to defer their first pind-daan in pursuit of an idealised Gaya visit they may not be able to complete; performing the rite promptly at Garh-Mukteshwar honours the ancestors more than postponing it. Families often complete their first pind-daan at Garh-Mukteshwar and then undertake the Gaya pilgrimage in a subsequent year as an act of devotion.

Voices from families
We booked this for our grandfather's annual shradh. The ceremony was performed with great reverence. Pandit ji even shared stories from the Garuda Purana which were very enlightening for the younger generation. Jai Shri Ram.
First time booking online for a religious ceremony. Was skeptical but the service exceeded expectations.
Excellent experience. We were worried about how to perform Pind Daan from abroad but the online option made it possible. The live video call was clear and we could participate in real time. The pandit was patient and answered all our questions. 🙏
My family performed Pind Daan through Prayag Pandits and it was a deeply spiritual experience. The location was serene and the pandit's chanting was beautiful. We felt connected to our ancestors throughout the ceremony. Jai Shri Ram.
We are NRI family based in USA. We booked online poojan and it was conducted very sincerely. The video quality was good and we could see everything clearly. The team sent us photos and videos after the ceremony too. Om Shanti.
We booked Pind Daan for our late father's shradh ceremony. The pandits were very knowledgeable and performed all rituals with proper Vedic mantras. The whole family felt at peace after the poojan. Highly recommended for anyone looking for authentic rituals. Jai Shri Ram.

Yes, Pind Daan can be performed at Garh Ganga either alongside Asthi Visarjan or as a standalone ceremony. The Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple area and the Shiv Ghat are scripturally acceptable sites for Pind Daan. Combined Asthi Visarjan + Pind Daan packages at Garh Ganga typically range from ₹7,100 to ₹15,000 depending on Brahmin Bhoj and package depth. However, for major Pind Daan ceremonies aimed at liberating seven generations (Sapta Pitri), Gaya remains the scripturally-preferred site. Garh Ganga is best suited for: Asthi Visarjan (primary), annual Shraddha, Tarpan, and family ancestral offerings. For comprehensive Pind Daan with bahi tracing, travel to Gaya is recommended.
Garhmukteshwar is one of the 14 most sacred Asthi Visarjan sites in India, specifically praised in the Skanda Purana and Brahma Purana. The name "Garh Ganga" refers to the ancient fort (garh) where the Ganga first enters the plains — making it the westernmost point where Ganga water retains its Himalayan purity. The site is believed to be where King Bhagirath first performed ancestral rites for his 60,000 cursed ancestors (the story of Ganga's descent). The adjacent Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is said to be the spot where Shiva himself accepted the Ganga on his head. Asthi Visarjan at Garh Ganga is considered especially powerful for families in North India who cannot travel to Varanasi or Prayagraj — the spiritual merit is considered equivalent.
Garhmukteshwar is located in Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh, approximately 100 km east of Delhi and 50 km from Meerut. It sits on the western bank of the Ganga river where the Ganga emerges into the plains from the lower Himalayan foothills. How to reach: (1) By train — nearest station is Garhmukteshwar (GMS), well-connected from Delhi, Moradabad, and Lucknow, (2) By road — 2-3 hour drive from Delhi via NH-9 (the Delhi-Meerut Expressway then NH-9), (3) By car/taxi — Delhi to Garhmukteshwar costs ₹2,500-₹4,000 one-way. The town is small but well-signposted. From the railway station or bus stand, it is 2-3 km to the main ghats. Our Garh Ganga Asthi Visarjan packages include pickup arrangements from Delhi or Meerut.
Garh Ganga is one of the most economical options for Asthi Visarjan. Our basic Asthi Visarjan packages start from ₹5,100 per day, including: pandit dakshina, all puja samagri (rice, sesame, kusha grass, cow milk), the complete scriptural vidhi at Brijghat or the Mukteshwar Ghat, Ganga Aarti participation, and a basic completion certificate. Standard packages with Brahmin Bhoj for 5 Brahmins, extended Tarpan, and video documentation range from ₹8,100 to ₹11,000. If combined with Pind Daan, the combined ceremony ranges from ₹7,100 to ₹15,000. For Delhi-based families, Garh Ganga offers significant savings compared to Haridwar or Varanasi while providing full scriptural legitimacy.
Yes. Garh Ganga is one of the most convenient day-trip Asthi Visarjan destinations from Delhi. The typical day-trip timeline: Depart Delhi 6:00 AM (avoid peak traffic), Arrive Garh Ganga 9:00-9:30 AM, Ghat arrival and preparation 30 minutes, Complete Asthi Visarjan ceremony 1-2 hours, Brahmin Bhoj (if included) 30-45 minutes, Depart Garh Ganga 1:00 PM, Arrive back in Delhi 3:00-4:00 PM. Total day duration: ~9-10 hours. Many Delhi-based families specifically choose Garh Ganga for this reason — they can complete the entire sacred observance in a single day without overnight travel. Our day-trip package includes pandit coordination, samagri, and ritual documentation.
Traditionally, the eldest son performs Pind Daan on behalf of the family. Any male descendant in the direct paternal line — son, grandson, or nephew — is eligible. A daughter's son (Dauhitra) may perform the rite when there is no male heir in the paternal line. In the modern era, many traditions also allow a devoted daughter to perform Shradh and Pind Daan, particularly in the absence of a male heir, with proper guidance from a qualified Pandit.
Prayag Pandits offers both in-person and online (live video) options for all Pind Daan services across all nine cities. The online option via WhatsApp or Zoom is fully valid from a Vedic perspective when the devotee participates actively in the Sankalp — the formal declaration of intent that personalises the ritual to your family. Your name, gotra, and the names of your departed ancestors are recited during the Sankalp, establishing the direct spiritual connection regardless of your physical location. This option is especially popular with NRI families and those who cannot travel on short notice.
Do not worry. Our pandits are experienced in guiding families who are unfamiliar with the ritual requirements. We will help you determine the necessary information before your ceremony and guide you through the process step by step. If you do not know your gotra, we use the standard prescribed alternatives that the Shastras sanction for such situations. No family should be prevented from performing their sacred obligations by lack of procedural knowledge — that is precisely what our pandits are there to provide.
