What is Narayan bali?
Narayan Bali is a sacred and necessary ritual, quite different from the yearly Shraddha we perform for all ancestors. Narayan Bali is specifically done for those souls who met an unfortunate, unnatural, or untimely end. This could be due to accidents, suicide, snake bites, drowning, or other such tragic events. It is also performed if, for some reason, the proper funeral rites (antyeshti) could not be completed, or if annual Shraddha rites have been missed for a long time.
The purpose, my child, is to bring peace and liberation (moksha) to these specific souls. It’s believed that such deaths can leave a soul restless, perhaps with unfulfilled desires, unable to move peacefully to the ancestral realm (Pitra Loka) and potentially causing disturbances (Pitra Dosha) for the living family. This ritual, often performed over three days at holy sites like Trimbakeshwar, involves invoking Lord Narayana’s grace. Using mantras and specific offerings, including a symbolic body often made of wheat dough, we help the soul detach from earthly bonds, satisfy its desires, and proceed peacefully on its journey, thus removing the Pitra Dosha and bringing blessings to the family.
