Asthi Visarjan poojan is conducted at the ghats in Varanasi.
Our Asthi Visarjan Puja Service Package is created with the intent of providing you peace and solace during your time of need. We aim to respect your rituals while relieving you of logistics and arrangements, offering a sense of tranquillity in this moment of remembrance.
Kashi — the city where Lord Shiva himself presides as the eternal protector — holds a singular place in the hearts of every Hindu family. When a beloved soul departs, the sacred waters of the Ganga at Varanasi offer them something no other place on earth can: liberation. Our Asthi Visarjan Package at Varanasi is designed to help your family complete this most tender and necessary of rituals with full scriptural accuracy, dignified care, and the quiet guidance of an experienced pandit who understands what you are carrying.
We handle every detail — from the arrival of the ashes to the final immersion in the river — so that your family can be fully present in prayer, rather than distracted by logistics.
Among all the tirthas mentioned in Hindu scripture, Kashi (Varanasi) is described as the most exalted. The Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana declares that whoever breathes their last breath here — or whose mortal remains are immersed in the Ganga at Kashi — receives the Taraka Mantra directly from Shiva’s own lips. This divine whisper is said to confer moksha, liberating the soul from the cycle of birth and death.
This belief, held for thousands of years, is not merely tradition. It is the living faith of millions who make the journey to Kashi specifically so their departed loved ones may find peace. The Ganga at Varanasi is not just a river — she is Bhagirathi, the sacred mother who accepts what we offer and carries it to the divine.
For Asthi Visarjan in particular, the Dashashwamedh Ghat and the revered Manikarnika Ghat hold special prominence. Manikarnika is considered the most sacred cremation ground in all of Hinduism — it is said that the fire here has burned without interruption since the beginning of time. The mythological and spiritual depth of Manikarnika Ghat is profound, and performing Asthi Visarjan in its waters carries immeasurable spiritual merit.
When you entrust this ceremony to us, we ensure the ritual is performed at the most auspicious ghat available on the day of your visit, with complete Vedic recitation and the warmth your family deserves.
This package has been carefully assembled to cover every element that the shastras prescribe for a complete Asthi Visarjan. You will not need to arrange anything separately — simply arrive with the ashes, and we take care of the rest.
We know that arriving at Varanasi for this ceremony — sometimes from far away, often in grief — can feel overwhelming. Our process is designed to be clear, calm, and guided at every step.
Your coordinator meets you at a pre-arranged point near the ghat. You are escorted to the ceremony area, and the pandit greets your family with reverence. A brief conversation ensures the pandit knows the name, gotra, and any specific details of the departed soul, so the prayers are personalised and accurate.
The ceremony formally begins with a Sankalp — the chief mourner (usually the eldest son or nearest male relative, though women are equally welcome to lead) takes a solemn vow before God and the Ganga, stating the purpose of the ritual and the name of the soul for whom it is being performed. This is a deeply moving moment that anchors the entire ceremony in sincerity.
The pandit performs a full invocation of the Ganga, followed by Tarpan — the offering of water mixed with sesame seeds and kusha grass, poured with the palms turned downward in the ancestral gesture. The mantras recited at this stage are drawn from the Rigveda and the Garuda Purana.
Rice flour balls (pindas) are prepared and offered with milk, honey, and ghee. These are placed at the edge of the Ganga as nourishment for the departing soul on its journey. The pandit guides the family through each step with quiet explanation.
This is the heart of the ceremony. The ashes are placed in the Ganga — either from the ghat steps or from a boat, depending on the family’s preference and the day’s conditions. As the ashes enter the water, the pandit recites the moksha mantras, and the family is invited to offer flowers and pray in silence or aloud, as they feel moved. Many families describe this moment as one of the most profound of their lives — grief, love, and a deep sense of release all at once.
The ceremony closes with an aarti to the Ganga and a brief prayer for the peace of the departed soul and the well-being of the family. Prasad is distributed. Your coordinator remains with you for as long as needed.
For a complete understanding of all rituals involved, we recommend reading our detailed guide to Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi, which covers the scriptural basis, the significance of each step, and answers many common questions.
This service is suited for any Hindu family that has lost a loved one and wishes to perform Asthi Visarjan at Varanasi — the most sacred location for this rite. Specifically, this package is ideal for:
If you also wish to perform Pind Daan as a full ceremony (separate from the brief Pind Daan included in this package), you may consider our dedicated Pind Daan in Varanasi package, which can be combined with Asthi Visarjan on the same day.
Prayag Pandits has been serving families across India and abroad for many years, helping them complete their most sacred obligations with authenticity and care. When you come to us for Asthi Visarjan, you are not engaging a booking agent — you are working with pandits who have performed these very rituals hundreds of times and who understand the emotional weight of what you are doing.
Traditionally, Asthi Visarjan is performed on the third day after cremation (called Teeja), but in practice, many families wait longer due to travel or practical constraints. The shastras allow immersion within a year, and in special circumstances even beyond. What matters most is the sincerity of the intention. Please do not feel guilty if time has passed — the Ganga accepts all offerings with equal grace.
Women can and do participate fully in Asthi Visarjan. The Sankalp and the actual immersion of ashes can be led by the daughter, wife, mother, or any other close family member. Our pandits follow an inclusive approach, and there is no rigid restriction that reserves these rites exclusively for male members.
You need to bring the ashes of the departed. All puja materials — flowers, til, kusha, ghee, incense, and everything else — are provided by us as part of the package. Wear clean, preferably white or light-coloured clothing. Remove footwear before approaching the ghat. That is all.
Yes, we perform Asthi Visarjan on all days. However, we do check the Panchang on the day and may make minor adjustments to the timing to ensure the muhurta is auspicious. Rest assured we will always advise you in advance if any timing adjustment is needed.
Absolutely — and many families prefer to do both on the same visit. We include a basic Pind offering within the Asthi Visarjan package, but if you would like a full dedicated Pind Daan ceremony as well, we can arrange both on the same day with a brief interval between the two. Please let us know at the time of booking so we can schedule accordingly.
