How your Asthi Visarjan and Tarpanam are arranged

Arriving in Varanasi for the first time, sometimes from far away and while grieving, can feel unfamiliar. Your coordinator and pandit explain the arrangements and your participation step by step.

1. Meet your coordinator and pandit

After booking, the team confirms your arrival details. You receive the coordinator’s contact details 24 hours before arrival. At the agreed ghat area, the coordinator helps you meet pandit ji, who has the pooja items ready and explains what your family will do.

2. Prepare for the Sankalp

Bring the Asthi Kalash securely closed and wrapped in a clean white cloth. Share the departed person’s full name and gotra, along with the family and ancestor details needed for the Sankalp. The Sankalp is the statement of intention that places the departed person and the purpose of the prayer at the centre of the rite. The family member leading the ceremony follows the pandit’s guidance. A daughter, wife, mother or another close family member may lead; it is not reserved exclusively for men.

3. Participate in Tarpanam

Tarpanam, the offering of water in remembrance of the ancestors, is included in this package. The pandit leads the prayers and guides the water offerings using the supplied materials, including sesame and kusha. The family follows his explanation through each step. You do not need to arrive knowing the Sanskrit shlokas or each ritual step.

4. Complete Asthi Visarjan

The pandit guides the asthi pooja and the immersion of the ashes in the Ganga. This is the central act of Asthi Visarjan: the family brings the remains of a loved one to the sacred river with remembrance and prayer. The pandit recites the prayers and helps you follow the rite; you may offer your own prayers quietly as the ceremony proceeds. This is a ghat-based arrangement. Boat hire is excluded and must be arranged separately if you require it.

5. Conclude the ceremony

The pandit guides the closing prayers for the departed and the conclusion of the rites. Local guidance and coordination are included throughout the ceremony. Allow approximately 45–60 minutes for Asthi Visarjan and Tarpanam; Pind Daan is a separate ceremony and is not part of this booking.
