There are ancestors in every family whose last rites were either incomplete, missed for years, or simply never performed — because no one knew their names, their death anniversaries, or even who they were. This uncertainty can weigh heavily on a family. If you have been experiencing repeated misfortunes, health troubles, financial setbacks, or conflicts that seem to have no clear cause, your elders may have pointed you toward Pitru Dosh. One of the most powerful remedies prescribed in our scriptures for this condition is Tripindi Shradh — a sacred ritual that extends peace and liberation to those unknown or forgotten ancestors who are still waiting for their final oblation.

Our Online Tripindi Shradh Pooja in Prayagraj brings this profound ceremony to you wherever you are in the world. Performed by experienced pandits on the banks of the Triveni Sangam — where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati meet — this ritual connects your family’s prayers directly to one of the most potent tirthas in all of Hinduism. You witness every step live via WhatsApp or Zoom, and our pradhan pandit performs the entire vidhi in your name and your family’s name as your pratinidhi (representative).

What Is Tripindi Shradh and Why Does It Matter

The word Tripindi comes from tri (three) and pindi (pind, or rice-ball offering). In standard Shradh, pind are offered to your immediate known ancestors — father, grandfather, great-grandfather. Tripindi Shradh goes further. It offers pind simultaneously to three divine forces — Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar (Shiva) — invoking all three to grant mukti to those departed souls in your lineage who have been overlooked or who could not receive their due rites.

Our scriptures are clear on when this ritual becomes necessary. The Brahma Purana states that when a person’s shradh has not been performed for three consecutive years after their death, their soul enters a state of distress, unable to move forward in its onward journey. The Garuda Purana, which is dedicated almost entirely to the subject of death rites and the afterlife, describes in detail the suffering of such souls and specifically recommends Tripindi Shradh as the remedy. Similarly, the Matsya Purana speaks of aparitta pitara — ancestors who have been left behind — and the duty of the living to reach out to them through this rite.

Prayagraj holds a unique position in this tradition. Known as Tirthraj — the king of all pilgrimage sites — Prayagraj is mentioned in the Padma Purana as the place where the merit of performing Shradh is multiplied manyfold. The Triveni Sangam specifically is described as a place where the veil between the world of the living and the world of the ancestors is thinnest, making prayers and offerings especially effective. When Tripindi Shradh is performed here, the tradition holds that its merit reaches ancestors across multiple generations and across dimensions of existence.

Who Should Consider Tripindi Shradh

This is not a ritual for everyone — it is a specific remedy prescribed for particular circumstances. You should consider booking Tripindi Shradh if any of the following apply to your family:

  • Shradh was not performed for a deceased family member for three or more continuous years after their passing
  • You are experiencing Pitru Dosh in your kundali — particularly the placement of Sun, Moon, or Rahu in the 9th house or Pitru Sthan
  • There are unknown ancestors (अज्ञात पितर) in your lineage — forebears whose names, death dates, or gotra you do not know
  • A family member died in an accident, sudden death, or unnatural circumstances and proper last rites could not be performed
  • Your family has experienced recurring patterns of illness, financial loss, or marital difficulties across generations
  • You wish to perform Shradh for ancestors of your maternal lineage (Nana, Nani, Mama) who may not have received rites from their own family
  • You are an NRI or live far from Prayagraj and have never been able to perform ancestral rites at this sacred tirtha

Tripindi Shradh is also regularly recommended by Jyotishis (astrologers) as a Pitru Dosh Nivaran remedy. If your horoscope shows Pitru Dosh and your astrologer has suggested performing this rite, our pandits will coordinate the ritual on a tithi (lunar date) and day of the week that aligns with your specific astrological requirement.

What Is Included in This Package

  • Pratinidhi Service — Our pandit performs the entire puja in your name (your name and gotra are used in the sankalp), acting as your authorised representative at the Sangam
  • Complete Puja Samagri — All ritual materials arranged by us: sesame (til), barley (jau), kusha grass, flowers, dhoop, deep, ghee, pind materials, tarpan water, sacred thread, and all required items as per traditional vidhi
  • Sankalp — The formal declaration in your name, your father’s name, and your gotra, establishing the ritual intention before the sacred waters
  • Full Tarpan — Water offerings made to known and unknown ancestors across three generations (pitru, pitamah, prapitamah)
  • Tripindi Pind Daan — Three pind offered to Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar, along with offerings to अज्ञात पितर

  • Post-Puja Prasad Dispatch — Sacred prasad and the puja report sent to your address after the ceremony
  • Puja Photographs and Video Recording — A recording of the ritual shared with you after completion

How the Ritual Unfolds — Step by Step

Understanding the process can help you feel more connected to the ceremony even when participating online. Here is how the Tripindi Shradh unfolds at Triveni Sangam:

  1. Booking and Tithi Selection — After booking, our team contacts you to gather the required information: your name, father’s name, gotra, and any ancestor details you know. Together we select an auspicious tithi — Amavasya, Pitrupaksha dates, or a specific day recommended by your astrologer.
  2. Snan and Purification — On the morning of the puja, our pandit takes a ritual bath at Triveni Sangam and offers morning prayers, purifying himself before the ceremony begins.
  3. Sankalp — The pandit sits facing south (the direction of the ancestors) at the Sangam bank and performs the sankalp in your full name, father’s name, and gotra, declaring the purpose of the puja and invoking the blessings of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar to receive the offerings.
  4. Tarpan — Water mixed with sesame and kusha grass is offered in three rounds — to known ancestors, to unknown ancestors, and to the souls of those who died without anyone to perform rites for them.
  5. Pind Daan — Three sets of rice-ball offerings (pind) are prepared with sesame, honey, and ghee. The first is offered invoking Brahma Pitamah, the second invoking Vishnu, the third invoking Maheshwar (Shiva). This triple offering is what makes Tripindi Shradh uniquely powerful — the three cosmic forces together receive and liberate the ancestral souls.
  6. Brahmin Bhojan or Dakshina — A brahmin priest receives dakshina in symbolic fulfilment of the tradition of feeding a brahmin after Shradh.
  7. Visarjan — The pind and remaining offerings are immersed in the Sangam waters with prayers for the onward journey of the ancestors.
  8. Closing Prayers — The pandit offers closing prayers and formally concludes the sankalp, and a blessing is conveyed to your family.

When to Perform Tripindi Shradh

Tripindi Shradh can be performed throughout the year. However, certain times carry significantly greater merit:

  • Pitrupaksha (Shradh Paksha) — The 16-day period in the dark fortnight of Ashwin month (September–October) is the most sacred time for all ancestral rites. In 2026, Pitrupaksha runs from 26 September to 10 October. Tripindi Shradh performed during this period carries the highest spiritual merit.
  • Amavasya (New Moon Day) — Every month’s Amavasya is auspicious for Shradh. Many families who cannot come during Pitrupaksha choose Amavasya for their annual observance.
  • Gaya Amavasya, Somvati Amavasya — Certain Amavasyas falling on a Monday (Somvati) are considered especially powerful for Pitru Tarpan.
  • Solar or Lunar Eclipses — These celestial events are traditionally considered auspicious windows for Shradh and ancestral offerings.
  • Your Personal Astrologer’s Recommendation — If you have been given a specific date by your Jyotishi, our team will arrange the puja on that exact tithi.

Why Prayag Pandits

Prayag Pandits has been serving families at Triveni Sangam for many years. We are not a booking platform — we are a team of practicing pandits rooted in Prayagraj, deeply familiar with the sacred geography and the traditional scriptural methods of every ritual we offer. When you book with us, you are working directly with the pandits who perform the ceremony, not with middlemen.

Every pandit in our team is trained in Yajurveda and has performed Tripindi Shradh numerous times. We maintain strict adherence to traditional vidhi — no shortcuts, no abbreviations of the ritual. Your sankalp is performed with your full details, your ancestors are addressed by the names and gotras you provide, and the entire ceremony is conducted with the seriousness and reverence it deserves.

For families who have questions about which type of Shradh is appropriate for their situation — Tripindi, Narayan Bali, Nagbali, or standard Pind Daan — our pandits are happy to guide you before you book. We understand that navigating ancestral rites can feel unfamiliar, and we are here to help every step of the way.

You can also read our comprehensive guide on Shradh Karm — types, rituals, and significance to understand where Tripindi Shradh fits within the broader tradition of ancestral rites in Hinduism.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I participate in the puja even though I am online?

Yes, absolutely. At the time of the sankalp, our pandit will call you on WhatsApp or Zoom and have you repeat the sankalp mantra along with him. This is the most important moment of participation — by joining for the sankalp, you are spiritually present in the ritual even if you are physically thousands of kilometres away. The rest of the ceremony proceeds with you watching live.

What information do I need to provide before the puja?

We need your full name, your father’s name, and your family’s gotra (the ancestral lineage name, such as Kashyap, Bharadwaj, Vashishtha, etc.). If you know the name of the ancestor for whom you are performing the rite, and the tithi (lunar date) of their passing, please share that as well. If you do not know these details — particularly for unknown ancestors (अज्ञात पितर) — that is perfectly fine. The Tripindi Shradh is specifically designed for this situation, and our pandit will include the appropriate mantras for unknown forebears.

Is Tripindi Shradh different from regular Pind Daan?

Yes, they are related but distinct. Regular Pind Daan offers pind to your known ancestors — typically father, grandfather, and great-grandfather — on both paternal and maternal sides. Tripindi Shradh is specifically for situations where shradh has been missed for three or more years, or where the ancestors are unknown. It involves a three-fold offering that invokes Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar to collectively receive and liberate those overlooked souls. Many families perform both — Pind Daan for known ancestors and Tripindi Shradh for the unknown ones.

Can this ritual be performed online if I am outside India?

Yes, and in fact a significant number of our bookings come from NRI families in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and the Gulf countries. The online format was developed precisely for families who cannot travel to Prayagraj. The sankalp establishes your spiritual connection to the ritual regardless of physical distance, and the merit of the ceremony is fully conveyed to your ancestors through the pandit’s performance at Triveni Sangam.

How soon after booking will the puja be scheduled?

After your booking is confirmed, our team will contact you within 24 hours to discuss your specific requirements and select a suitable tithi. Depending on your preference and urgency, we can typically schedule the puja within 3–7 days. During Pitrupaksha season, we recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks in advance as our schedule fills up quickly during those 16 days.
