    What are Chakras?

According to some spiritual beliefs, our bodies are more than simply physical and mental; they also contain an energetic system known as chakras. Chakra is a Sanskrit term that literally translates to “wheel” or “cycle.” There are seven primary chakras that run the length of your spine, from the base to the crown of your head. This age-old idea has been incorporated into numerous New Age thought systems.Chakras are supposed to provide subtle energy that aids in the optimal functioning of your organs, mind, and intellect. Chakras and spiritual energy have not been properly studied in medical studies, but they may, like any religion or belief, help you think about your own mind and body.

Introduction to Svadhishthana Chakra (Sacral Chakra)

At the bottom end of the Sacrum is the Svadhishthana Chakra. VAM is its mantra. The Svadhishthana Chakra represents the second stage of human growth. The Svadhishthana Chakra is where consciousness evolves into pure, human consciousness.  It is the subconscious mind’s seat, storing all of our life events and impressions since the beginning of our existence in the womb. Our Karmas are stored in the Muladhara Chakra, but they are triggered in the Svadhishthana Chakra. The Svadhishthana Chakra’s awakening brings clarity and personality development. However, we must first cleanse our consciousness of undesirable traits. A Lotus with six petals is depicted in the Svadhishthana Chakra’s symbolic image.  Anger, hatred, jealousy, cruelty, want, and pride are the bad qualities that must be overcome. Lethargy, fear, doubt, wrath, envy, and greed are some base qualities that stymie our growth. The Crocodile is the animal that represents the Svadhishthana Chakra. It represents indolence, insensitivity, and the danger that lies dormant in this Chakra. Svadhishthana’s element is Water, which is also a symbol of hidden danger.  When water is out of control, it is soft and malleable, but it also has a tremendous amount of force. This is exactly how the Svadhishthana Chakra works. We might be entirely thrown off balance when negative emotions ascend from the subconscious to the conscious level. Brahma, the Creator, and Sarasvati, the Goddess of Wisdom and Fine Arts, are the Divinities of this Chakra. Svadhishthana’s colour is orange, the colour of the sunrise, which represents increasing consciousness.  The colour orange is associated with activity and purity. It represents the Chakra’s good attributes, such as joy, faith, self-confidence, and energy. Our bodies are always in contact with the energies that surround us. Every chakra affects the balance in our physical body by preserving and channelling pranic energy in our astral (energy) body.  The Sacral Chakra, also known as the Svadhishthana Chakra, is the second of the seven essential chakras. The placement of this chakra is best characterised as four fingerbreadths below the navel in the lower abdomen. Svadhishthana is a Sanskrit word that means “living place of the Self,” and it encourages personal growth and exploration of sexuality, desires, and creativity. The bladder, kidneys, and reproductive organs are all connected to the Sacral Chakra. Water is a symbol of movement and adaptability. This energy supports life transition by assisting with letting go, accepting change, and letting go.  Orange is a colour that is thought to inspire creativity and enjoyment.

    Traits of Svadhishthana Chakra

    The element of water’s flow

There is a tremendous amount of flow force within the water element. To avoid any negative outcomes, this energy must be managed. Our emotions flow through us without judgement when the Sacral Chakra is balanced. Recognizing these feelings improves our ability to comprehend and communicate our feelings. This restores harmony and balance.

The orange colour has a balanced intensity

The link with the colour orange, like a sunrise, is indicative of increasing consciousness. The colour orange is associated with activity and purity. This chakra is where we create the life we want. Joy, faith, self-confidence, and balanced energy are the attributes that this colour reveals.

    The Sacral Chakra’s sexual energy

We may form our desires with the Svadhishthana Chakra. The Sacral Chakra, being the centre of passion, unleashes the force of creation. This enables a person to realise the power of choice and form close bonds. Sacral Chakra is a pleasure-driven chakra that supports emotional well-being. It affects our sexuality as well as the expression of our emotional wants and desires.

    Relationships and emotional closeness

The Svadhishthana Chakra is concerned with personal identity and how it reacts to the physical world’s enticing impulses. When the second chakra is out of whack, it creates emotional instability, irritability, a lack of creativity, and a sexual obsession. A healthy Sacral Chakra allows you to take risks while still experiencing happiness and compassion.

Signs of an overactive and underactive Sacral Chakra

An overactive Sacral Chakra suggests the body is distributing too much energy. Overactive energy creates an overwhelming feeling since the Sacral Chakra influences emotions.  A hypersensitive nature is characterised by heightened emotional sensitivity and excessive mood swings. Because of the ongoing struggle to fill yourself with external objects, a sense of discontent with life can lead to addictive behaviours. An underactive Sacral Chakra can have a negative impact on one’s physical and mental health. When the Sacral Chakra is blocked, it causes a sense of loss of control that ranges from uncertainty to an inability to cope with life’s changes. Artistic abilities are also hampered by the ability to openly express wants.  Furthermore, being reliant or co-reliant on others causes a psychological imbalance that leads to a loss of self-awareness. The common health problems from an imbalanced Sacral Chakra are:
    • Chronic lower back pain
    • Arthritis
    • Genital or sexual problems
    • Hip issues
    • Anaemia
    • Joint problems
    • Low energy
    • Spleen and kidney issues
    • Premenstrual Syndrome

    Balancing the Second Chakra

When the Sacral Chakra is out of balance, you may experience emotional and physical weakness. Depression, hypersensitivity, and anxiety are all symptoms of a disrupted energy system.  An imbalanced Sacral Chakra manifests as a fear of losing control in a relationship with compulsive or obsessive conduct. It also has an impact on one’s relationship with physical objects such as employment and profession. The equilibrium of the chakras can be restored or realigned in a number of ways. Chakra healing promotes a balanced energy flow throughout the body. Here are a few suggestions for balancing your Sacral Chakra:

    Affirmations

They are a powerful tool for removing bad programming from the subconscious mind. If negative programming is present, it is the source of chakra imbalances in and of itself. Affirmations can help you rewire your subconscious mind to think positively and improve your energy vibrations.

The following are some affirmations that can help with the Sacral Chakra:

    • I am enthralled.
    • I am a creative individual.
    • have safeguards in place to keep me safe.

    Connect with Water

The Sacral Chakra is linked to the element of water as well as the flow of energy. Connecting with water, such as a lake or river, aids with the Svadhishthana Chakra’s balance. Showering or taking a warm bath can help you regulate your emotions.

    Meditation

Meditation is essential for chakra balancing and opening. Techniques for chakra meditation are fairly similar to conventional meditation techniques. Meditation can assist you in focusing on the good and letting go of negative thought patterns.

Yoga positions to stimulate and balance the Svadhishthana Chakra

    Crow Pose (Kakasana)

Kakasana increases mental equilibrium, concentration, and wrist and arm strength. This yoga asana stimulates the Sacral Chakra, increasing core awareness and removing fatigue with regular practise.

    Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)

The spine is well stretched in this yoga stance. The liver and spleen are stimulated by Trikonasana. The Triangle Pose promotes blood flow and tones stomach and back muscles in addition to realigning the spine.

    In a nutshell

The Svadhishthana Chakra, also known as the Sacral Chakra, represents our creative capacity, ability to maintain happy relationships, and sexual energy. Blockages are caused by suppressing vital energy or focusing on undesirable thoughts and patterns.  This chakra frees a person from self-control and the dread of being abandoned. Restoring the Sacral Chakra’s equilibrium results in a person who is more empowered and self-assured.

What is the Svadhishthana Chakra and what does it govern?

The Svadhishthana Chakra (Sacral Chakra) is the second energy center, located approximately four finger-widths below the navel near the sacrum. The Sanskrit name means the dwelling place of the self (Sva = self, Adhishthana = dwelling/seat). The Sat-Cakra-Nirupana describes it as a six-petalled vermillion lotus with the Sanskrit syllables BA, BHA, MA, YA, RA, and LA. The bija mantra is VAM. The presiding deity is Lord Vishnu (preserver) with Goddess Rakini as the Shakti. The element is Apas (Water). Physically, the Svadhishthana governs the reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder, lower back, and all fluid-related systems in the body. Psychologically it governs creativity, emotional intelligence, sensuality, pleasure, adaptability, and the ability to experience joy. A balanced Svadhishthana allows for healthy emotional expression, creative flow, harmonious relationships, and the ability to experience life without attachment or addiction. In Tantric tradition, this chakra is the seat of creative power (Shakti) — the same energy that creates life can be channeled upward for spiritual creation.

What are the signs of a blocked Svadhishthana Sacral Chakra?

An imbalanced Svadhishthana Chakra creates disturbances related to emotions, creativity, and relationships. Physical signs: reproductive health issues, lower back pain, urinary tract problems, kidney issues, menstrual irregularities, sexual dysfunction, hip stiffness, and dehydration-related conditions. Emotional signs: emotional numbness or emotional volatility (swinging between extremes), guilt about experiencing pleasure, creative blocks and lack of inspiration, difficulty forming intimate relationships, codependency, jealousy, fear of change, and addictive behaviors (substance, food, or relationship addictions). When overactive: emotional manipulation, obsessive attachment, hedonistic tendencies, and boundary violations. When underactive: inability to feel emotions, creative stagnation, fear of intimacy, rigidity and resistance to change. The Water element of Svadhishthana means it responds well to water-based therapies: swimming, warm baths, spending time near rivers or oceans, and drinking adequate water. Yoga poses for Svadhishthana include Baddha Konasana (Butterfly), Goddess Pose, and hip-opening sequences.

How do I heal and activate the Svadhishthana Chakra?

Healing the Svadhishthana Chakra involves working with its Water element and emotional-creative nature. Mantra: Chant VAM 108 times daily during the hours of sunset (the water element is strongest at dusk). Meditation: Visualize a six-petalled orange lotus just below the navel, with a white crescent moon (the Water symbol) at its center. Breathe into this space and release stored emotions with each exhale. Yoga: Hip-opening poses are essential — Baddha Konasana, Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (Pigeon Pose), Upavistha Konasana (Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend), Malasana variations, and fluid Vinyasa sequences that emphasize flowing movement. Creative expression: Painting, dancing, singing, writing, cooking — any creative activity activates the Sacral Chakra. Diet: Orange foods (oranges, mangoes, carrots, pumpkin), honey, coconut water, and adequate hydration. Water therapy: Warm baths with orange essential oil, swimming in natural water, visiting sacred rivers (the Ganga"s purifying energy is directly associated with the Water element). Gemstones: Carnelian, Orange Calcite, Moonstone, and Tiger"s Eye.

What are the 7 Chakras in the human body according to Hindu yoga?

The seven chakras are energy centers along the spine described in the Yoga Upanishads (particularly Yoga Chudamani and Shandilya Upanishad) and elaborated in Tantric texts like the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana. From base to crown they are: Muladhara (Root, base of spine) — survival, grounding, element Earth; Svadhishthana (Sacral, below navel) — creativity, emotions, element Water; Manipura (Solar Plexus, above navel) — willpower, confidence, element Fire; Anahata (Heart, center of chest) — love, compassion, element Air; Vishuddha (Throat) — communication, truth, element Ether; Ajna (Third Eye, between eyebrows) — intuition, wisdom, beyond elements; Sahasrara (Crown, top of head) — divine consciousness, moksha. Each chakra has a specific bija mantra (LAM, VAM, RAM, YAM, HAM, OM, silence), a presiding deity (Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Isha, Sadashiva, Shambhu, Paramashiva), a specific number of lotus petals (4, 6, 10, 12, 16, 2, 1000), and associated physical organs and psychological functions.

What are the main physical symptoms of a blocked Heart Chakra?

A blocked Anahata Chakra can manifest physically through chest tightness or pressure, chronic upper back pain between the shoulder blades (as muscles contract to protect the heart), shallow breathing or restricted lung capacity, respiratory conditions including asthma, and cardiac irregularities in more severe cases. The arms and hands — the physical organs of the Anahata through which we give and receive — may feel heavy, cold, or weak. Immune dysregulation is also associated with heart chakra blockage, reflecting the well-documented connection between emotional state and immune function.

What yoga asanas are best for opening the Heart Chakra?

Heart-opening backbends are the primary asanas for the Anahata Chakra, as they physically open the chest cavity. Key postures include: Ustrasana (Camel Pose) — reaching back to grip the heels with the chest open to the sky; Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) — lifting the chest from the floor while remaining grounded; Matsyasana (Fish Pose) — arching the spine with chest lifted; Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose) — a gentler backbend accessible to most practitioners. All should be held with full, deep Ujjayi breath and the conscious intention of expanding the heart space.

What is the relationship between the Sahasrara Chakra and Moksha?

In the yogic and Vedantic traditions, the awakening of the Sahasrara Chakra is the direct experiential counterpart of the realisation of Moksha (liberation). Moksha, in Advaita Vedanta, is not an event after death — it is the recognition in this very life (Jivanmukti) that one true nature is the infinite Brahman — pure consciousness beyond birth and death. The Sahasrara is the energy centre that, when fully awakened, allows this recognition to occur. When Kundalini Shakti unites with Parama Shiva at the Sahasrara, the individual soul directly experiences its identity with the universal soul.

Can chakra practices and Hindu pilgrimage be combined for deeper healing?

Absolutely — the ancient Rishis designed the pilgrimage tradition partly as a systematic activation of the chakra system. Sacred bathing (Snan) at holy confluences like Triveni Sangam purifies the lower chakras. Vedic mantra recitation during puja activates the Vishuddha. Meditation at sacred sites opens the Ajna and Sahasrara. Performing ancestral rites (Pind Daan, Tarpan) fulfills karmic debts that create blocks in multiple chakras simultaneously. Prayag Pandits specialises in creating authentic pilgrimage experiences that integrate all these dimensions.
