Pitru Paksha 2026 runs from September 27 (Purnima Shradh) to October 11 (Sarva Pitru Amavasya). Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere — late September and early October is spring, and flights from Sydney or Melbourne to India are in high demand. Australian families should book pandit services by August 2026 and flights by July.

Pind Daan, Asthi Visarjan and Shradh from Australia: A Complete Guide for Australian Hindu Families

Approximately 440,000 Hindus live in Australia, with the community concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The Australian Hindu community is diverse — many families trace their origins to India via Fiji and other Pacific nations, while a large number are first and second-generation Indian immigrants from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Maharashtra, and other states.

Australia’s distance from India — roughly 9–10 hours by air — means that traveling for a ritual requires meaningful planning and expense. At the same time, many Australian families feel a deep obligation to perform the correct ancestral rites for their departed family members. This is exactly the challenge Prayag Pandits exists to solve. Since 2019, we have served 2,263+ families from 11+ countries, including a significant number of Australian Hindu families who rely on our service for both online rituals and guidance when they travel to India.

Services Available for Australian Families

Pind Daan

Pind Daan is the offering of pindas — rice and sesame balls — at the sacred rivers of Gaya, Prayagraj, and Varanasi. These offerings, made with Vedic mantras by a qualified pandit, are the primary means of ensuring the departed soul’s liberation. The ritual must be performed at these specific tirthas — not anywhere in Australia. We offer both online Pind Daan via live video (for those who cannot travel) and in-person services when you visit India.

The 3-in-1 Online Pind Daan Package covering Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Gaya is ₹21,000 — approximately $382 AUD at current exchange rates. This is the most comprehensive option, covering all three primary sacred cities.

Asthi Visarjan

When a family member passes away in Australia and is cremated, the ashes can be immersed in the sacred rivers of India. Australian law does not restrict taking cremated remains out of the country. You should carry the death certificate and cremation certificate, and declare the ashes at customs. Indian Customs allows import of cremated remains for religious purposes.

If you cannot travel to India, our online Asthi Visarjan service at Prayagraj is ₹9,999 — approximately $182 AUD. The ceremony is performed with full Vedic procedure at the Triveni Sangam while you attend via WhatsApp video. Learn more about Asthi Visarjan options in India.

Shradh and Tarpan

The annual Shradh during Pitru Paksha — performed on the correct tithi for each departed ancestor — is the most frequently requested service from Australian families. Our online Tarpan service for NRIs at Prayagraj starts at ₹5,100 (approximately $93 AUD); Shradh at Prayagraj is ₹7,100 (approximately $129 AUD).

Online vs In-Person: Making the Right Choice from Australia

Australia’s distance from India makes every trip a significant investment — a return economy ticket costs $1,000–$1,800 AUD, and you need at least 5–7 days to justify the journey. For annual Shradh and Tarpan, the online service is the clear practical choice. For a one-time first Pind Daan for a parent or grandparent, many Australian families choose to travel — combining the pilgrimage with a broader India trip.

Australia–India Time Zones: A Favorable Difference
Australia Eastern Standard Time (AEST) is 4.5 hours ahead of IST in winter (May–October) and 5.5 hours ahead during AEDT (daylight saving, October–April). This means morning rituals in India happen in the early afternoon in Australia. A ritual at 7 AM IST is 11:30 AM AEST — perfect timing. Sydney families can join the video call during their lunch break. Melbourne, Brisbane, and Canberra families have a similar favorable window. Perth (AWST) is 2.5 hours ahead of IST, making 7 AM IST = 9:30 AM Perth time — also very convenient.

Travel Guide: Flying from Australia to India’s Sacred Cities

Flights from Australia to India

Australia to India is a 9–11 hour journey depending on the route. Most flights connect through Southeast Asian hubs (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok) or the Gulf (Dubai, Abu Dhabi). Here are the main options:

  • Sydney (SYD) → Delhi (DEL) via Singapore: Singapore Airlines or Air India, approximately 11–12 hours total (Singapore stopover). SYD–SIN direct is 8 hours; SIN–DEL is 5.5 hours. From Delhi, connect to Prayagraj (1.5 hr flight) or Varanasi (1.5 hr flight) by IndiGo or Air India.
  • Melbourne (MEL) → DEL via Singapore or KL: Via Singapore Airlines, total 12–14 hours. MEL–SIN is 8 hours; connecting to Delhi adds 5–6 hours. Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur (KUL) is another option.
  • Sydney (SYD) → Mumbai (BOM) via Singapore: Singapore Airlines operates this itinerary — a good option if your ritual is in Varanasi, which has direct domestic flights from Mumbai (1.5 hrs, IndiGo).
  • Perth (PER) → DEL via Singapore: The shortest Australia–India routing at approximately 10–11 hours total. Perth to Singapore is 5 hours; Singapore to Delhi is 5.5 hours.
  • Brisbane (BNE) → DEL via Singapore or Bangkok: Thai Airways via Bangkok or Singapore Airlines, approximately 12–14 hours total.

Approximate round-trip airfare (economy class, booked 2–3 months ahead): $1,000–$1,600 AUD from Sydney or Melbourne; $900–$1,400 AUD from Perth.

Visa Requirements for Australian Hindus

Australian residents of Indian origin typically hold an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card, which grants lifelong visa-free entry to India. If you hold an Australian passport without OCI, apply for an Indian e-Visa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 business days before travel. The e-Visa is processed quickly and efficiently for Australian passport holders — a 1-year multiple-entry tourist e-Visa is standard.

Note: Fiji-Indian families with Australian passports may hold British Overseas or Fijian travel documents; contact the Indian High Commission in Canberra for the specific visa pathway for your situation.

The Four Sacred Cities for Ancestral Rites

Prayagraj — Tirthraj, King of All Pilgrimages

At the Triveni Sangam — the meeting of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the unseen Saraswati — Prayagraj is described in the scriptures as the most sacred spot on earth for ancestral rites. Pind Daan performed here is said to immediately free the soul from cycles of rebirth. Read about Pind Daan at Prayagraj.

Varanasi — Kashi, City of Light and Liberation

Varanasi is the oldest living city in the world and one of the most powerful sites in the Hindu tradition for post-death rituals. Asthi Visarjan at the Ganga ghats of Varanasi, particularly Manikarnika, carries immense spiritual merit. Many Australian families visiting India for the first time choose Varanasi as their base — it is accessible by direct domestic flight from Delhi, Mumbai, and other major hubs. Learn about Asthi Visarjan at India’s sacred rivers.

Gaya — The Pilgrimage City of Pind Daan

Gaya in Bihar is the primary destination in all of Hindu scripture for Pind Daan. The Vishnupad Temple — enshrining Lord Vishnu’s footprint — the Falgu River, and the immortal Akshaya Vat together form the sacred complex where pinda offerings are made. The Garuda Purana specifically states that Pind Daan at Gaya is equivalent to performing the ritual at all other tirthas combined. Read about Pind Daan at Gaya.

Haridwar — Gateway to the Himalayas

Haridwar, where the Ganga first touches the plains after its descent from the Himalayas, is one of the seven most sacred cities in Hinduism. Har ki Pauri ghat is where Tarpan and Asthi Visarjan rituals are performed in the sacred waters. Haridwar is approximately 230 km from Delhi — 4–5 hours by road or 3.5 hours by Shatabdi Express.

How to Book from Australia

  1. WhatsApp +91 77540 97777 — Message us the name of the departed, the ritual required, and your preferred city. Given the favorable time difference, messages sent in the morning AEST typically receive a response by late morning AEST (8 AM–8 PM IST working hours).
  2. Provide gotra and family details — Share the gotra, date of passing, and your full name. If the gotra is unknown, we perform the universal (saamaanya) procedure.
  3. Pay via Wise or bank transfer — Wise (TransferWise) from an Australian bank account is the easiest and cheapest method. Transfer AUD, we receive INR. We confirm receipt on WhatsApp within 2–4 hours.
  4. Join the video call at the scheduled time — For Sydney/Melbourne (AEST), a ritual at 7 AM IST is 11:30 AM AEST. We send a WhatsApp video link 30 minutes before the ritual begins.
  5. Receive documentation — Complete ritual video and photos, plus a PDF certificate, within 24 hours of the ceremony.

Why Australian Hindu Families Trust Prayag Pandits

The Australian Hindu community includes families from many different backgrounds — direct Indian immigrants, Indo-Fijian families, Sri Lankan Tamil families, and others. We have experience serving all of these communities and understand the ritual variations specific to each tradition.

For Indo-Fijian families — who form a large part of the Hindu community in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane — the ritual traditions are rooted in the practices of North Indian communities that migrated to Fiji as indentured workers in the 19th century. These families may have questions about which specific mantras and procedures apply to their lineage. Our pandits are experienced in addressing these questions and ensuring the correct procedure is followed.

Our commitment is to authenticity, not convenience. Every ritual is performed at the actual tirtha, by qualified pandits, with the full sequence of mantras. We do not abbreviate the ceremony. We do not offer a 15-minute “quick” puja. The ritual you pay for is the ritual performed.
