How is Gaya Pind Daan different from regular Pitrupaksha Shradh?

Regular Pitrupaksha Shradh provides annual nourishment and temporary relief to ancestral souls and must be repeated each year. Gaya Pind Daan achieves permanent liberation — the ancestor is considered fully Mukta (liberated) and does not require further annual Shradh after the Gaya rite is performed. Many families complete Gaya Shradh for a departed ancestor after the customary one-year mourning period as the culminating act that permanently concludes the ancestral rite cycle. Gaya Pind Daan and annual Pitrupaksha Shradh serve complementary purposes: Gaya for finality, Pitrupaksha for ongoing maintenance of the ancestral relationship.
