How can I tell if a Banarasi saree is genuine or an imitation?

Answered by Prakhar Porwal ·

Check the reverse side — genuine kadhua brocade shows no floating threads. Real zari is slightly dull or tarnished, never bright metallic. Look for the GI certification tag. The weight of a genuine katan Banarasi saree is substantial — it feels heavy in the hand. If the price seems extremely low for a supposedly genuine handwoven product, it is likely a machine-made imitation. Purchase from government-certified handloom stores or established gaddidars with verifiable family weaving heritage in Varanasi.
