How should a Banarasi saree be stored and cared for?

Answered by Prakhar Porwal ·

Genuine Banarasi silk sarees require careful storage to preserve the silk and zari. Store in a clean cotton cloth (muslin) bag, never in plastic which traps moisture and promotes mildew. Place dried neem leaves or cedar wood in the storage area to deter insects. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight which fades silk. Have the saree dry-cleaned by specialists in silk garments — never machine wash. Refold periodically along different crease lines to prevent permanent fold marks. Proper storage can preserve a fine Banarasi saree for generations.
