What trauma is stored in the root chakra?

Answered by Prakhar Porwal ·

The Muladhara (Root) Chakra stores trauma related to survival, safety, and basic trust — particularly experiences from early childhood (0-7 years) and ancestral/generational trauma. According to both yogic tradition and modern somatic therapy, the Root Chakra retains imprints of: Survival threats: experiences of poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, war, natural disasters, or any situation where physical survival was threatened. Abandonment: loss of a parent, being left alone as a child, adoption trauma, or emotional unavailability of caregivers. Physical abuse: violence, corporal punishment, or physical boundary violations. Birth trauma: difficult birth, premature birth, NICU experiences, or separation from the mother immediately after birth. Ancestral/generational trauma: In Hindu tradition this connects directly to Pitru Dosh — unresolved trauma from ancestors that is passed down through the lineage. The Garuda Purana describes how unfulfilled desires and unresolved suffering of ancestors affect descendants through their Muladhara, manifesting as chronic anxiety, financial instability, and health issues in the family line. Collective trauma: partition, displacement, caste-based violence, or community-level devastation. Healing the Root Chakra involves grounding practices (walking barefoot, yoga), the bija mantra LAM, and — from a Hindu spiritual perspective — performing Pind Daan and Pitru Dosh Nivaran puja to resolve the ancestral dimension of the stored trauma. Prayag Pandits offers combined Pitru Dosh Nivaran with chakra-aligned guidance for families experiencing generational patterns of instability.
