What is Asthi Visarjan in English?
Asthi Visarjan translates to immersion of bones or sacred ash immersion in English. The word Asthi (अस्थि) means bones or mortal remains, and Visarjan (विसर्जन) means immersion or release into water. In Hindu tradition, Asthi Visarjan is the ritual of collecting the cremated remains of a deceased person and immersing them in a sacred river — most commonly the Ganga at Prayagraj (Triveni Sangam), Varanasi, Haridwar, or Gaya. The ritual is typically performed on the 3rd, 4th, or 13th day after cremation. According to the Garuda Purana, immersing the asthi in a holy river helps the departed soul attain moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth) and reach Pitru Loka peacefully.
