What rituals are performed during Pratipada Shradh?
Pratipada Shradh follows the standard Pitrupaksha ritual sequence: the karta (performer) takes a purifying bath early in the morning, wears clean white or light-coloured clothes, and begins with Sankalp (ritual intention) naming the deceased maternal grandparent. This is followed by Tarpan (water offering with black sesame and kusha grass), Pind Daan (offering rice balls representing the ancestor’s subtle body), and Brahmin Bhoj (feeding Brahmins as proxy for the ancestor). The pinda is offered facing south, the direction of Yama (the lord of the departed).
