Should I observe an Ekadashi fast while performing Ekadashi Shradh?
This is a common question since Ekadashi is traditionally a fasting day. During Pitrupaksha, the Shradh obligation takes precedence over the Ekadashi fast. The karta (performer) should eat after completing the Shradh ceremony and feeding the Brahmins. However, the food consumed should remain sattvic — no grains if you follow a strict Ekadashi vrat, or you may consume grain-based food as part of the Shradh prasad since Pitru Karma supersedes vrat rules according to Dharma Shastra. Consult your family pandit for guidance specific to your tradition.
