How is Sarva Pitru Amavasya different from monthly Amavasya Tarpan?
While monthly Amavasya Tarpan (water offering) is a regular practice observed on every new moon day throughout the year, Sarva Pitru Amavasya during Pitrupaksha holds far greater significance. It is the only day in the entire Hindu calendar when ALL ancestors — regardless of the tithi on which they died — can be honoured in a single ceremony. Monthly Amavasya Tarpan is a brief ritual (15-20 minutes) usually done at home, while Sarva Pitru Amavasya involves a full Shradh ceremony with Tarpan, Pind Daan, Brahmin Bhoj, and often Vastra Daan, taking 2-4 hours at a sacred tirtha.
