Is performing Pind Daan during Pitrupaksha compulsory or optional?

According to Vedic Dharmashastra, performing Shraddha during Pitrupaksha is a mandatory duty for every householder — as obligatory as any other religious observance. The texts describe it as the repayment of Pitru Rin (ancestral debt) and as a fundamental expression of familial piety. That said, the tradition also acknowledges that circumstances vary, and incomplete or modified observance performed with sincere intention carries partial merit. The ideal is to perform the full rites at a Tirtha during Pitrupaksha.
