All Pind Daan

What is the difference between Shruti and Smriti authority for Pind Daan?

उत्तर दिया Prakhar Porwal ·

Shruti (literally ‘that which is heard’) refers to the four Vedas, Brahmanas, Aranyakas, and Upanishads — texts considered to be divinely revealed and eternally valid. Smriti (‘that which is remembered’) refers to the Dharmashastras, Grihyasutras, and Puranas — texts composed by human sages that interpret and apply Vedic principles. Pind Daan has authority from both categories: the Vedas (Shruti) mandate ancestral worship and Pinda offerings, while the Manusmriti, Yajnavalkya Smriti, Garuda Purana and other Smriti texts provide the detailed procedural rules. This dual authority makes Pind Daan one of the most rigorously mandated practices in all of Hinduism.
