What is the significance of Varanasi compared to Gaya and Prayagraj for Pind Daan?

All three are supreme Tirthas for ancestral rites. Gaya (Bodhgaya area) is associated with the final liberation (moksha) of the soul through the Vishnupada ritual. Prayagraj (Triveni Sangam) is considered the king of all Tirthas and is particularly potent during Pitrupaksha. Varanasi is associated with Shiva’s Taraka Mantra and is especially recommended when combined with Asthi Visarjan and for ancestors who died in inauspicious circumstances. Many families perform rites at all three Tirthas during a single pilgrimage.
