The Kashi Khand verse 26.67 records the specific boon granted by Lord Shiva: when Vishnu asked that the site become the supreme tirtha conferring liberation, Shiva said: O Shiva, because your earring let go (mukta) of your ear and fell here, so may this supreme tirtha of all tirthas be a place where people are let go (mukti).
