Who can perform Pind Daan in Varanasi — only sons or any family member?

Traditionally, the eldest son is the primary performer. However, Vedic texts also permit daughters, grandsons, nephews, and other close relatives when no son is available. In cases where the entire family is abroad or unavailable, a proxy can perform the rites under the guidance of a qualified pandit. The sincerity of intention and proper procedure matter more than strict gender rules in most living traditions.
