Pitru Paksha 2026 runs from September 27 (Purnima Shradh) to October 11 (Sarva Pitru Amavasya). Pandit availability at Gaya, Prayagraj, and Varanasi fills up weeks before the fortnight begins. UK families booking before September receive confirmed dates and live video links.

Pind Daan, Asthi Visarjan and Shradh from the UK: A Practical Guide for British Hindu Families

Approximately one million Hindus live in the United Kingdom, concentrated in cities like Leicester, London, Birmingham, Coventry, and Bradford. The British Hindu community has deep roots — many families arrived from Gujarat, Punjab, and other parts of India in the 1960s and 70s, and subsequent generations have grown up here while maintaining strong ties to ancestral customs.

When a parent or grandparent passes away in the UK, the family faces a very specific challenge: the Pind Daan, Asthi Visarjan, and Shradh ceremonies must be performed at the correct tirthas in India — Gaya, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Haridwar — not in Leicester or London. Finding a knowledgeable pandit who will travel to the actual sacred site and perform the ritual with full Vedic procedure, while coordinating with you in English across the IST–GMT time difference, requires a service you can trust. Since 2019, Prayag Pandits has served 2,263+ families from 11+ countries, including a large number of UK-based Hindu families.

Services Available for UK-Based Families

Pind Daan

Pind Daan is the primary ritual for the peace of the departed soul. Rice and sesame offerings (pindas) are made at the river bank with Vedic mantras. The three most efficacious locations are Prayagraj, Gaya, and Varanasi — each mentioned specifically in the Vedic scriptures. We offer both in-person services (when you visit India) and online Pind Daan with live video for UK families who cannot travel.

The 3-in-1 Online Pind Daan Package covering Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Gaya is ₹21,000 — approximately £196 GBP at current exchange rates. This is the most comprehensive option and ensures the ritual is performed at all three primary sacred cities.

Asthi Visarjan (Sacred Ashes Immersion)

When someone passes away in the UK and is cremated, the ashes can be brought to India for immersion in the Ganga. UK law allows you to take cremated remains abroad — they should be in a sealed container and declared at customs. Indian Customs permits the import of cremated remains for religious purposes; carry the death certificate and cremation certificate.

If you cannot travel to India, our online Asthi Visarjan service performs the ceremony symbolically at the sacred site with full Vedic mantras while you attend via video call. Online Asthi Visarjan at Prayagraj is ₹9,999 — approximately £94 GBP.

Shradh and Tarpan

Shradh is the annual ceremony performed during Pitru Paksha for the peace of all departed ancestors. Tarpan is the water offering with sesame and barley. Both rituals are performed on behalf of NRI families at the actual tirthas. Shradh at Prayagraj starts at ₹7,100 (approximately £66 GBP); Tarpan in Prayagraj starts at ₹5,100 (approximately £48 GBP).

Online vs In-Person: Which Option Should You Choose?

The UK is approximately 5.5 hours behind IST — a much smaller time difference than the USA. This makes online rituals particularly convenient for UK families, as the ritual morning in India (6–10 AM IST) corresponds to 12:30–4:30 AM GMT. We generally schedule UK online rituals slightly later in the morning IST — around 9–11 AM — so that UK families can join at 3:30–5:30 AM GMT (early morning), or we can arrange afternoon rituals (2–4 PM IST = 8:30–10:30 AM GMT), which is most convenient.

Visa Requirements for UK Hindus

Most British Hindus of Indian origin hold an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card, granting unlimited visa-free entry to India. If you hold a UK passport without OCI, apply for an Indian e-Visa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 business days before travel. The 5-year or 10-year multiple entry tourist visa is available for UK citizens and is easy to obtain. UK nationals can also get a 60-day e-Visa on arrival at major Indian airports.

The Four Sacred Cities for Ancestral Rites

Prayagraj — Triveni Sangam, the King of Pilgrimages

Prayagraj stands at the confluence of three rivers — Ganga, Yamuna, and the subterranean Saraswati. The scriptures call it Tirthraj, the greatest of all pilgrimage sites. Pind Daan at the Triveni Sangam is believed to grant the soul immediate progress toward moksha. Learn more about Pind Daan at Prayagraj.

Varanasi — The Eternal City of Lord Shiva

Varanasi is described in the Puranas as the city that exists outside of time and death. Ritual bathing, Pind Daan, and Asthi Visarjan at Varanasi’s ghats are among the most auspicious acts in the Hindu tradition. Many British Hindu families visit Varanasi for the Ganga Aarti in the evenings — a profoundly moving ceremony that has no equivalent anywhere in the world. Learn about Asthi Visarjan in India’s sacred cities.

Gaya — The Site of Lord Vishnu’s Footprint

Gaya in Bihar is the most important site specifically for Pind Daan. The Garuda Purana states that a single Pind Daan at Gaya is equivalent to rites performed at all other tirthas combined. The Vishnupad Temple, the Falgu River, and the Akshaya Vat together constitute one of Hinduism’s most sacred pilgrimage complexes. Learn more about Pind Daan at Gaya.

Haridwar — Where the Ganga Meets the Plains

Haridwar, 230 km from Delhi, is where the Ganga descends from the Himalayas. Har ki Pauri — the sacred ghat — is where Tarpan and Asthi Visarjan have been performed for millennia. The Ganga Aarti at Haridwar every evening is one of the most photographed religious ceremonies in the world. From Delhi, Haridwar is 4–5 hours by road or 3–4 hours by Shatabdi Express train.

Why UK Hindu Families Trust Prayag Pandits

We have been serving the UK Hindu community since 2019. Our experience spans families from Leicester’s large Gujarati community, London’s Tamil and Telugu diaspora, and Punjabi families across Birmingham and Coventry. We understand the specific sensitivities of second and third-generation British Hindus who may not know the ritual details but want the ceremonies performed with full authenticity.

Our pandits are trained in the Vedic tradition with expertise in the ritual requirements of different regional traditions — Gujarati, Punjabi, South Indian, and others. We do not use a one-size-fits-all approach. The sankalpa (sacred intention) and the mantras are tailored to the correct regional tradition of your family.
