Can the asthi (ashes) be kept at home until the ceremony?

The Garuda Purana strongly advises against keeping asthi at home for extended periods. If immediate immersion is not possible, the urn must be hung on a tree (not placed on the ground or kept inside the house) and strictly protected from impurities during transport. The scriptures warn that keeping the asthi at home beyond a few days traps the soul in the household, causing disturbance to both the departed and the living family. For families who must delay the immersion, the best practice is to store the urn in a clean, elevated place outside the living quarters (a veranda or a separate cool room), with a lit diya (lamp) and regular water offerings. Our pandits can arrange urgent Asthi Visarjan on short notice to avoid prolonged home storage.
