What is Vidya Daan and why is it considered Shreshtha Daan?
Vidya Daan is the donation of knowledge or educational resources and is called Shreshtha Daan (supreme donation) in Hindu scriptures because unlike material donations which are finite, knowledge grows when shared and benefits generations. The Skanda Purana and Vishnu Purana declare that giving knowledge is superior to giving wealth because wealth is exhausted in one lifetime but Vidya empowers multiple lifetimes. At Magh Mela 2026, Vidya Daan takes many forms: sponsoring the education of underprivileged children, donating books to Vedic pathshalas, funding scholarships for Brahmin students studying ancient texts, supporting libraries at ashrams, and providing teaching materials to rural schools. The Prayagraj region has numerous Sanskrit pathshalas where Vidya Daan is traditionally offered. According to scripture, the daan is most powerful when given without expectation (nishkama) and to deserving recipients (paatra). Vidya Daan during Magh Mela carries the special merit of being performed at Triveni Sangam — Prayag is called Tirtharaj (king of pilgrimage sites), so any spiritual act here multiplies in punya. Prayag Pandits facilitates Vidya Daan by partnering with verified Sanskrit pathshalas and educational trusts at Prayagraj.
