Can Asthi Visarjan be performed at home if travel to a tirtha is impossible?

Yes, home Asthi Visarjan is permitted when travel to a sacred site is genuinely impossible. The scriptural requirement is that the asthi be immersed in flowing water — so a home ceremony is typically performed by: (1) collecting Ganga Jal (water from the Ganga, bottled and sold by authorised vendors), (2) performing the complete vidhi and mantras at a clean home shrine, (3) placing the asthi with sesame seeds in a clean pot of Ganga Jal, (4) ceremonially pouring the contents into a local river, pond, or the nearest flowing water body. However, scriptures state that tirtha-based immersion carries significantly greater merit.
