Pitrupaksha

Do we need to fast during Pitrupaksha?

Answered by Prakhar Porwal ·

A complete fast is not mandatory, but the Karta should observe dietary restrictions on each day of Pitrupaksha: no meat, fish, alcohol, onion, or garlic. Many devout practitioners also reduce the quantity of food eaten and avoid oil on the day of the main Shraddha. These restrictions are observed out of respect for the ancestors, not as punishment, and the tradition is flexible about health needs.
