How do I carry ashes (asthi) from the UK to India?

UK law permits you to take cremated remains abroad. The ashes should be in a sealed, clearly labelled container. Declare them at customs and carry the death certificate and cremation certificate. Most airlines accept cremated remains as carry-on luggage (check your airline’s specific policy). Indian Customs allows import of cremated remains for religious purposes.
