How many days after death should Asthi Visarjan ideally be performed?

The ideal window is within 10 days of cremation, before the Dasha Karma ceremony, as prescribed in the Antyakarmadipaka and related smriti texts. Bone collection itself should happen on the 2nd or 3rd day, or as soon as the pyre has completely cooled. If immersion within 10 days is impossible due to travel, weather, or other constraints, the ritual remains fully valid if performed later — within 3 months, within a year, or even after several years. For significantly delayed Asthi Visarjan, the ceremony is typically combined with Shraddha and Pind Daan to restore spiritual balance. Ashes kept in a clean urn remain spiritually valid for the immersion, regardless of elapsed time.
