What does Tirthraj mean in Sanskrit?

Answered by Prakhar Porwal ·

Tirthraj (or Tirtharaj) is a Sanskrit compound: ‘teertha’ means a sacred ford or pilgrimage site, and ‘raja’ means king. Tirthraj therefore means ‘the King of all pilgrimage sites.’ It is an honorific title given to Prayagraj by the Puranas.
