What is Akal Mrityu according to Hindu scriptures?

उत्तर दिया Prakhar Porwal ·

Akal Mrityu (literally “untimely death”) refers to a death that occurs before the scripturally-natural lifespan of the individual. The Garuda Purana (Preta Khanda) classifies deaths into Kal Mrityu (timely death in old age after a fulfilled life) and Akal Mrityu (premature death). Akal Mrityu includes deaths from: accidents, suicide, murder, drowning, fire, snakebite, lightning, wild animal attacks, dark magic, Brahmin’s curse, sudden illness, and any death where scriptural last rites could not be completed properly. The Garuda Purana states that souls who die in Akal Mrityu become trapped in the atmosphere (Antariksha) as wandering Pretas — unable to progress to Pitru Loka or receive standard Shraddha offerings until special expiatory rites are performed.
