Char Dham & Jyotirlinga

What is the spiritual significance of visiting all 12 Jyotirlingas?

उत्तर दिया Prakhar Porwal ·

Visiting all 12 Jyotirlingas is considered one of the highest pilgrimages in Hindu tradition, directly prescribed by the Shiva Purana for absolute liberation (moksha) and removal of all sins accumulated over multiple lifetimes. The Shiva Purana Koti Rudra Samhita verse declares: By seeing the 12 Jyotirlingas, one is freed from all sins and attains the abode of Shiva. Each Jyotirlinga represents a unique manifestation of Shiva — Mahakaleshwar embodies the destroyer of time, Vishwanath at Kashi represents the grantor of moksha, Rameshwar represents Rama”s devotion, and Omkareshwar represents the cosmic sound Om. The pilgrimage traditionally takes 30-45 days by road and is often completed by devotees over multiple trips given the geographical spread. Key spiritual benefits include: removal of Mahapaatakas (greatest sins), release from ancestral curses (Pitru Dosh), protection from planetary afflictions, and attainment of Shiva Sayujya (union with Shiva after death). Many devotees chant the Dvadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram daily even without physically visiting — the scriptural belief is that mentally visualizing all 12 sites grants partial merit. Prayag Pandits can arrange Rudrabhishek and specific pujas at each Jyotirlinga as part of organized Jyotirlinga yatra packages.
