What mantras are recited and what should be said during Asthi Visarjan?

The scriptures prescribe specific Sanskrit mantras for each stage of Asthi Visarjan. Upon arriving at the river, the performer faces the South and recites “Namo Astu Dharmaya” (Salutations to Dharma). While entering the water and releasing the urn, the performer recites “Sa me Prito Bhavatu” (May he/she be pleased with me). After exiting, the performer looks at the Sun and offers Dakshina to the officiating Brahmins. Additionally, the Pitri Sukta (Rig Veda 10.15) is recited to invoke the ancestors, and the Gayatri mantra to Lord Yama is chanted for the peaceful passage of the soul. Our Vedic pandits use the correct Shakha-specific mantras (Shukla Yajurveda, Krishna Yajurveda, Rig Veda) based on your family’s tradition.
