Pind Daan & Shradh

When is the best time to perform Pind Daan in Kurukshetra?

Answered by ·

Pind Daan at Kurukshetra can be performed throughout the year, but the following periods carry enhanced spiritual merit:

Pitrupaksha (September–October) — The most auspicious 16-day window for all ancestral rites across India. Sannihit Sarovar sees its highest pilgrim activity during this period.

Solar eclipse days — Kurukshetra has a unique scriptural connection with eclipses. The Mahabharata specifically states that charity, Shradh, and Tarpan performed on Kurukshetra land during a solar eclipse yield inexhaustible spiritual merit. Lakhs of pilgrims gather at Brahma Sarovar and Sannihit Sarovar during every solar eclipse visible in India.

Amavasya (new moon) — Particularly Somvati Amavasya (Monday new moon) is considered powerful for Tarpan and Pind Daan at Kurukshetra.

October to March is the most comfortable period weather-wise for a Kurukshetra pilgrimage. Summers (April–June) can be extremely hot, with temperatures exceeding 45°C.
