Trusted Pandit in Varanasi — Book Kashi Puja Services

The Kashi Khand of the Skanda Purana makes a declaration that no other city in the world can claim: whoever dies in Varanasi (Kashi) receives the Taraka Mantra — the liberating syllables — whispered by Lord Shiva himself into their ear at the moment of death. Death in Kashi is not loss; it is crossing over. That is the spiritual foundation on which millions of families choose to bring the ashes of their departed to Varanasi for Asthi Visarjan, or to perform Pind Daan at the ghats where the Ganga flows with that particular gravity. If you need a trusted pandit in Varanasi for any of these rites, Prayag Pandits has experienced Teerth Purohits stationed at the principal ghats — Dashashwamedh, Manikarnika, Harishchandra, and Pishach Mochan — ready to conduct the ceremony with the reverence and precision it deserves.

All services are available both for families who travel to Varanasi and for those who need the ceremony conducted on their behalf. Your assigned purohit will be in contact from booking to completion, with WhatsApp updates and video documentation included throughout. We have served more than 2,263 families since 2019 across all our locations.

Pind Daan in Varanasi

Pind Daan at Varanasi is performed at Dashashwamedh Ghat, the oldest and most continuously active ritual ghat in Kashi. The Kashi Khand states that rites performed at this tirtha carry the special blessing of Lord Vishwanath (Shiva) — making Pind Daan here particularly effective for ancestors who spent their lives in devotion to Shiva or who passed away in Varanasi. Tarpan in Varanasi

Tarpan — water libations with sesame seeds and kusha grass — performed at the ghats of the Ganga in Varanasi. The Ganga at Varanasi carries a particular sanctity because of the city’s status as the eternal abode of Lord Shiva — and water drawn from this stretch of the river is considered among the most powerful for satisfying one’s Pitru Rin. Available for performance during Pitrupaksha and throughout the year.

Tripindi Shradh — Varanasi

Tripindi Shradh is conducted when ancestral rites have been missed for three or more consecutive years, or when an ancestor died under inauspicious circumstances. About Our Pandits in Varanasi

Varanasi is described in the Kashi Khand of the Skanda Purana as Avimukta — the place Shiva never abandons. This is not merely a devotional claim; it is the theological basis for why Varanasi is considered the supreme place for final rites in the Hindu tradition. Every ceremony performed here is understood to take place under Lord Vishwanath’s direct witness.

The Teerth Purohits of Prayag Pandits in Varanasi are experienced in the specific rites performed at each of the city’s principal ghats. They operate primarily at three sites:

  • Dashashwamedh Ghat — the oldest continuously active ritual site in Varanasi, used for Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Shradh. Named for the ten-horse sacrifice performed here by Lord Brahma.
  • Manikarnika Ghat — the principal cremation and Asthi Visarjan ghat, considered the most powerful site for the final immersion of ashes. The Kashi Khand identifies this as the place where Lord Vishnu performed penance and where Shiva grants liberation to souls.
  • Pishach Mochan — the tirtha prescribed specifically for ancestors who require liberation from lower states. Pind Daan performed here is believed to free souls classified as Pretas (wandering spirits).

Our Kashi purohits are experienced in guiding both visiting families and NRI families for whom the ceremony is conducted remotely. All of them speak Hindi and have worked with families from across India and abroad. For a deeper understanding of Varanasi’s spiritual geography and significance, read our comprehensive Varanasi guide.

The fires at Manikarnika Ghat are believed to have burned without interruption since before recorded history — tended by the Dom community, who have held hereditary rights over the cremation ground for generations. This is why Varanasi carries the title Moksha Nagri: the city where the boundary between life and liberation is at its thinnest. Every rite performed at Kashi — whether a simple Tarpan or a multi-day Tripindi Shradh — takes place within this field of continuous sanctity that no other city in India replicates.

Sacred Ghats in Varanasi for Puja

Varanasi has 84 ghats along its stretch of the Ganga, but specific ghats carry specific ritual prescriptions. Here are the four principal sites where our purohits conduct ceremonies:

Manikarnika Ghat — The Mahashamshan

Manikarnika is the most famous ghat in Varanasi and the primary site for cremation and Asthi Visarjan. The name derives from the legend that Sati’s earring (manikarnika) fell here during Lord Shiva’s grief-stricken journey. The fires at Manikarnika are said to have burned continuously for thousands of years. The Kashi Khand states that Lord Shiva whispers the Taraka Mantra to the dying at this ghat, granting immediate liberation. Asthi Visarjan performed here is considered among the most powerful final rites in the Hindu tradition.

Dashashwamedh Ghat — The Ancient Center

Dashashwamedh is the most historically active puja ghat in Varanasi, used continuously for thousands of years for ritual bathing, Tarpan, Pind Daan, and ceremonial pujas. The famous Ganga Aarti is performed here every evening by a group of purohits, watched by thousands of pilgrims and tourists. For families performing Pind Daan or Tarpan in Varanasi, Dashashwamedh is the central and most accessible site.

Harishchandra Ghat

Harishchandra Ghat is the second cremation ghat of Varanasi, named for the legendary King Harishchandra who worked here as a cremation attendant during his trials. It is considered an appropriate site for Asthi Visarjan, particularly for those who connect personally to the narrative of truth and sacrifice that Harishchandra represents. Less crowded than Manikarnika and often preferred by families seeking a quieter setting for the ceremony.

Pishach Mochan — Liberation from Lower Realms

Pishach Mochan is a specific tirtha within the Kashi Kshetra prescribed for ancestors believed to be in lower states — those classified as Pretas or Pisachas in the tradition. Pind Daan performed here is considered the correct remedy for freeing such souls. This is recommended in cases where a family has experienced repeated unexplained difficulties or where a jyotishi has advised that an ancestor has not received proper liberation. Our purohits at this tirtha are familiar with the specific puja procedure it requires.

How to Book a Pandit in Varanasi

Whether you are traveling to Varanasi yourself or need the ceremony performed on your behalf, the process is straightforward. Here are the four steps:

1

Choose Your Service

Select the service that fits your situation from the list above. If you are uncertain — for example, whether Asthi Visarjan alone or the 2-day package better suits your family’s needs — WhatsApp us at +91 77540 97777. We will ask about the ancestor’s circumstances and recommend the correct rite and ghat.

2

Share the Details

To complete the Sankalp at the start of the ceremony, we need the name, gotra, and relationship to the deceased of the ancestor for whom the rite is being performed. We collect this via WhatsApp before the ceremony. For families performing Tarpan, a list of ancestors across three generations is helpful but not required — we can work with the information you have.

3

Your Purohit is Assigned

A Kashi Teerth Purohit experienced in the specific rite and ghat is assigned to your booking. They will contact you directly before the ceremony to confirm timing, meeting point, and any remaining questions. For multi-service bookings (for example, Asthi Visarjan plus Pind Daan on the same day), they will plan the sequence of the day for you.

4

Ceremony & Documentation

The ceremony is performed in full at the correct ghat. Video documentation is recorded and shared via WhatsApp. For NRI families, this is the complete verification that the rite was properly conducted. A summary of the Sankalp details — ancestor names, gotra, tithi — is provided in writing on request.

Frequently Asked Questions — Pandit in Varanasi

Manikarnika Ghat is considered the primary and most powerful site for Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi. The Kashi Khand of the Skanda Purana identifies it as the place where Lord Shiva himself presides over the passage of souls, and where the fires of cremation have burned continuously since ancient times. Harishchandra Ghat is an appropriate alternative, particularly for families who prefer a quieter setting. Our purohits work at both ghats and will recommend the more suitable site based on your specific circumstances and timing. The Asthi Visarjan package at Varanasi costs ₹5,100 and includes the full Vedic puja preceding the immersion.

Both are prescribed tirthas for Pind Daan in the scriptures, but with different emphases. The Vayu Purana names Gaya as the supreme site for Pind Daan — specifically for ancestral liberation across generations. Varanasi (Kashi) is the city of moksha, and Pind Daan performed here carries the additional blessing of Lord Vishwanath’s witness. The traditional recommendation is to perform Pind Daan at Gaya if your primary concern is ancestral liberation, and at Varanasi when the ancestor had a connection to Kashi or passed away there. Many families perform Pind Daan at both as part of a combined pilgrimage. We offer services at both cities — contact us to plan the sequence.

Yes, and this is a common combination for families who have recently lost a loved one. The typical sequence is: Asthi Visarjan at Manikarnika Ghat in the morning, followed by Pind Daan at Dashashwamedh Ghat in the same day or the following morning. Our purohit will coordinate the timing and sequence for you. If you are visiting for this combination, we recommend the 2-Day Varanasi Asthi Visarjan Package (₹12,500), which covers both ceremonies along with the Ganga Aarti and a morning ritual bath at the Ganga, providing the complete traditional observance across two days.

Pishach Mochan is a tank (kund) tirtha within the Kashi Kshetra, prescribed specifically for ancestors classified as Pretas or Pisachas — souls that have not found liberation and continue in lower states. According to the Kashi Khand, Pind Daan performed at Pishach Mochan frees such souls from their current state and enables their onward journey. This tirtha is typically recommended when a family has been advised by a jyotishi that an ancestor is in a disturbed state, or when unexplained difficulties persist in the family despite regular Shradh being performed. It is included in our Special Pind Daan Varanasi package (₹11,550) and can also be added to a standard booking on request.

The most auspicious time for Shradh puja in Varanasi is during Pitrupaksha — the 16-day period from Bhadrapada Purnima to Sarva Pitru Amavasya (September 26 to October 10 in 2026). Within Pitrupaksha, the Tithi (lunar date) corresponding to the ancestor’s date of passing is the prescribed day for their individual Shradh. Sarva Pitru Amavasya (the final day) is appropriate for performing Shradh for all ancestors when specific Tithis are not known. Outside of Pitrupaksha, the monthly death anniversary Tithi (Maasik Shradh) and the annual death anniversary (Varshabdik Shradh) are also appropriate times. Our purohit will advise on the correct Tithi for your family when you book.
