Kurukshetra, a place of religious beliefs in terms of ancestors rituals. Sannihit Sarovar in this place is believed to be a site for offering Pinddaan along with Asthi Visarjan which offers emancipation from the cycle of birth and death.

It is believed that if the Shraadh puja (Tarpanam) is conducted on the day of solar eclipse & the devotee takes a bath in the pond, then he gets a blessing of thousands of Ashvamedha yagas. Many people gather over the bank of Sannihit Sarovar in the day of Amavasya or on solar eclipse to conduct the rituals.
Performing asthi visarjan Kurukshetra is one of the most spiritually significant acts a family can do after the loss of a loved one. Kurukshetra — the sacred land of the Mahabharata — is among the holiest tirthas in all of Bharatvarsha, and its waters are believed to carry the power to liberate the souls of the departed. When you immerse the mortal remains of your beloved in the Sannihit Sarovar or the Brahma Sarovar here, you are performing a ritual that has been observed by Hindu families for thousands of years, with full Vedic piety and the blessings of an experienced Brahmin pandit by your side.
Our team at Prayag Pandits has been conducting Asthi Visarjan rituals at sacred tirthas across India for many years. We understand that this journey comes at a time of grief, and our pandits handle every step with deep care, respect, and proper Vedic procedure so your family can focus entirely on prayers and peace.
After a Hindu cremation, the bones and ashes that remain are called asthi (अस्थि) — literally “bones” in Sanskrit. Collecting and preserving these remains is known as asthi sanchayan, and the ritual of immersing them in a sacred body of water is called asthi visarjan or asthi pravah.
According to Hindu belief, the physical body is made of the five elements (pancha tattva): earth, water, fire, air, and ether. After death and cremation, the soul still holds a connection to the physical remains until they are properly returned to the sacred waters. The Garuda Purana and the Antyeshti Samskaras (last rites) described in our Dharmashastra literature all emphasize that immersing the asthi in a holy river or sarovar helps the departed soul sever its attachment to the material world and move toward moksha — liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
The scriptures recommend that asthi visarjan be performed as soon as possible — ideally within 10 days of cremation, though families who live far away or face practical difficulties can perform it later during specific auspicious occasions. What matters above all is that it is performed with sincerity, proper Vedic sankalp, and the right mantras.
For families who want to understand the ritual in greater depth before booking, we recommend reading our detailed guide on Asthi Visarjan, which covers the complete scriptural basis and step-by-step procedure.
Among all the tirthas of northern India, Kurukshetra holds a uniquely elevated position in the Hindu tradition. It is not simply a historical battlefield — it is a deeply sanctified land whose spiritual power is attested in the Mahabharata, the Puranas, and the Vedic literature itself.
The Mahabharata calls Kurukshetra Dharma Kshetra — the field of righteousness. The Bhagavad Gita was delivered here by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the first day of the Kurukshetra war, making this land the birthplace of one of Hinduism’s most sacred texts. When Lord Brahma himself is said to have performed a grand yajna at this spot and blessed it as a place of eternal spiritual merit, the land became forever sacred for performing pitru karma — rites for the ancestors.
Sannihit Sarovar is the most important sacred pond in Kurukshetra and the primary site for asthi visarjan and other pitru rituals. The name means “the coming together of all rivers” — this is the place where, according to the Puranas, all the sacred rivers of India invisibly converge during every new moon (Amavasya) and especially during Somvati Amavasya and solar eclipses. A dip or ritual performed here during these times is considered equivalent to taking a sacred bath in all the holy rivers of India simultaneously. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gather at Sannihit Sarovar during solar eclipses, making it one of the largest gathering points in northern India for pitru karma.
Brahma Sarovar is another enormously sacred water body in Kurukshetra — one of the largest sacred ponds in Asia. It is believed that Lord Brahma himself created this sarovar when he performed the original creation yajna. Performing rituals here is considered to grant immense punya (spiritual merit) and is especially beneficial for seeking blessings for the departed.
The region also includes Pehowa (ancient name: Prithudak Tirtha), located about 25 km from Kurukshetra town. Pehowa is one of the Pancha Tirthas (five sacred sites) specifically designated in the scriptures for pitru karma. Performing pind daan and asthi visarjan at Pehowa is directly mentioned in the Mahabharata as extremely meritorious for the liberation of ancestors. Many families from Haryana and Punjab have been coming to Pehowa for generations specifically to perform their ancestral rites.
While all the great tirthas — Haridwar, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gaya — are sacred places for asthi visarjan, Kurukshetra is especially suited for certain families:
If you are looking for an alternative sacred location for asthi visarjan, you may also want to consider our packages for Asthi Visarjan at Varanasi or our comprehensive Asthi Visarjan in Haridwar services.
This is the foremost site for pitru karma in Kurukshetra. The sarovar is surrounded by 34 ghats, and there is a dedicated area for asthi visarjan where the pandit guides the family through the complete ritual. The belief that all sacred rivers converge here invisibly makes the waters of this sarovar especially potent for liberating the souls of ancestors. On Amavasya days, lakhs of pilgrims visit, but the pandit will ensure your family’s ritual is conducted with proper privacy and full attention.
The vast Brahma Sarovar is located near the Bhadrakali temple complex. It has a serene atmosphere with clear, clean water and well-maintained ghats. Rituals performed here invoke the blessings of Lord Brahma and are particularly auspicious for seeking a smooth onward journey for the departed soul.
Located 25 km from Kurukshetra town on the banks of the Saraswati river (now a seasonal stream), Pehowa is one of the most ancient pitru tirthas in India. The Mahabharata specifically names it as a place where performing pind daan liberates even the most troubled ancestors. Many families from the Haryana-Punjab belt visit Pehowa as their primary tirtha for ancestral rites, just as families from eastern India go to Gaya. Our package can include a visit to Pehowa if your family wishes to perform pind daan here in addition to asthi visarjan.
Here is how the ceremony typically unfolds when you arrive at Kurukshetra with us:
Many families choose to combine asthi visarjan with pind daan to perform a complete set of pitru karma in a single visit. Pind daan — the offering of rice balls (pindas) with sesame seeds and water — is a separate but closely related ritual that provides continued nourishment and support to the ancestral souls in their onward journey.
At Kurukshetra, pind daan is most powerfully performed at Pehowa (Prithudak Tirtha), which is specifically mentioned in the Mahabharata’s Vana Parva as one of the places where pitru karma liberates 21 generations of ancestors. The combination of asthi visarjan at Sannihit Sarovar and pind daan at Pehowa in a single visit constitutes a complete and powerful pitru karma that brings lasting peace to the departed and blessings to the family.
If you are planning to also perform pind daan at other major tirthas, we also offer Pind Daan at Gaya, which is considered the ultimate site for ancestral liberation in the Hindu tradition.
Asthi visarjan can be performed at any time throughout the year — there is no wrong time to fulfill this sacred duty. However, certain occasions carry heightened spiritual power:
Outside of these special occasions, the ritual is equally valid and spiritually potent on any day of the year. If you need to perform asthi visarjan urgently after a bereavement, there is no need to wait for a specific occasion — contact us and we will arrange the ceremony at the earliest possible date.
Kurukshetra is a well-connected city in Haryana and is easy to reach from most major cities in northern India:
Once in Kurukshetra, Sannihit Sarovar and Brahma Sarovar are both located within the town itself and are easy to find. For Pehowa, you will need transport (about 25 km from Kurukshetra town on the Pehowa-Patiala highway) — we can help arrange this if needed.
Booking with us is straightforward. Our team is available seven days a week and we understand that enquiries for this service may come at any hour in a time of grief. Call or WhatsApp us at +91 7754097777 and one of our experienced pandits will respond to you promptly.
When you contact us, please have the following details ready:
We will confirm the booking, assign a senior pandit, and share all details you need for the visit. If you are coming from a distant city, we can also advise on nearby accommodation options so the family is comfortable throughout.
The complete ceremony — including snan, sankalp, tarpan, and asthi visarjan — typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. If you are adding pind daan at Pehowa, plan for an additional 1 to 1.5 hours, plus the travel time of about 45 minutes each way to Pehowa. Most families from Delhi can complete the entire pilgrimage in a single day trip.
Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Combining asthi visarjan with pind daan constitutes a complete pitru karma. We include the option for pind daan at Pehowa in our package on request. Alternatively, if you wish to perform pind daan at Gaya — considered the foremost site for ancestral liberation — we also offer a separate Pind Daan at Gaya service. Many families choose to do asthi visarjan at a closer tirtha and then plan a separate Gaya visit for pind daan at a convenient time.
The main thing you need to bring is the asthi (the bone and ash remains) in a clean container — typically a copper or clay pot or a cloth pouch. Our package includes all the puja samagri, so you do not need to purchase or arrange any ritual materials. Wear simple, clean clothes — preferably white or light-colored. Bring a change of clothes if you plan to take a dip at the sarovar. And of course, bring an open heart and the intention to perform this sacred duty with full devotion.
The standard package covers asthi visarjan at Sannihit Sarovar in Kurukshetra town. Pind daan at Pehowa can be added to the package on request — please mention this when you contact us for booking so we can plan the pandit’s time and any transport coordination accordingly.
Both are deeply sacred tirthas and both are excellent choices. Haridwar has the Ganga flowing through it, and immersing asthi in the Ganga at Haridwar carries immense merit. Kurukshetra, on the other hand, has the unique distinction of the Sannihit Sarovar where all sacred rivers are said to converge — especially powerful during Somvati Amavasya and eclipses. Kurukshetra also has Pehowa for combined pind daan, and its historical connection to the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita gives it a distinctive spiritual depth for pitru karma. The choice often comes down to family tradition and geography — we offer Asthi Visarjan at Haridwar as well if you prefer that location.
Absolutely. We take advance bookings for specific dates. For particularly auspicious occasions like Somvati Amavasya, Surya Grahan, or Pitrupaksha, we do receive higher demand, so we recommend booking at least 10-14 days in advance to ensure a confirmed slot with our pandit. Call us at +91 7754097777 to confirm your preferred date.
