What happens to the soul after Akal Mrityu according to the Garuda Purana?

According to the Garuda Purana (Preta Khanda), the soul of an Akal Mrityu victim suffers a distinctive trapped existence: it cannot enter the normal Yama Marg (the pathway to the ancestral realm), it wanders in the atmosphere (Antariksha) for the remainder of its natural lifespan had it not died prematurely, it experiences hunger, thirst, and anguish without the nourishment of Shraddha, it cannot receive the pindas offered by descendants because these offerings are destroyed in the atmosphere before reaching the soul. This state continues until expiatory rites — specifically Narayan Bali Puja — are performed to cleanse the taint of the unnatural death and grant the soul eligibility to receive subsequent Shraddha. Without Narayan Bali, no amount of regular ritual can liberate the trapped soul.
