The Garuda Purana sets the window before the tenth day after cremation — but ashes kept far longer, through distance or migration or simply not knowing, are received here in full. The Gayawal Panda performs the complete asthi visarjan vidhi — Sankalp, mantra recitation, samagri offered to the asthi kalash, and immersion of the asthi on the bed of the Falgu river. Families who wish to can continue to pind daan at Vishnupad the same morning.

When to perform
When to perform asthi visarjan at Gaya — and why late is never too late
The Garuda Purana Preta Khanda prescribes bone collection on the 3rd, 7th or 9th day after cremation, with immersion before the 10th. Gaya is the one place where a late visarjan needs no apology: it is the third and final gate of salvation, and the Mahabharata records Lord Ram performing the rites for King Dasharatha here. For ashes kept beyond the ten-day window through distance, migration or simply because no one in the family knew what to do, a short Prayaschitta rite restores the offering and the visarjan carries full merit on any day of the year.
