Frequently Asked Questions

What is Panchak Nivaran puja and when should it be done?

Panchak Nivaran puja is a specific Vedic ritual performed to neutralize the harmful effects of a death that occurred during Panchak kaal (the 2.5-day period when Moon transits through the last five nakshatras). It should be done BEFORE or DURING the cremation for maximum efficacy, though it can also be performed after cremation if the family did not know about Panchak at the time. The puja involves a qualified Brahmin performing sankalpa in the name of the deceased, preparing five kusha grass effigies (putlas), reciting specific mantras from the Garuda Purana and Yajurveda, placing the effigies on the pyre, and performing havan with specific samidha (fire offerings). The puja typically takes 2-3 hours. After cremation, follow-up rites include 11-day Mahamrityunjaya jap, Navagraha shanti, and a dedicated Pind Daan for the deceased at Prayagraj, Gaya, or Varanasi. Panchak Nivaran can also be performed as a preventive measure during Pitrupaksha for ancestors who died during Panchak in previous years. Prayag Pandits provides complete Panchak Nivaran services including the cremation-time puja, follow-up jap, and Pind Daan at sacred tirthas.

How far in advance should I book my pandit for Pind Daan in Varanasi?
Ideally, book your pandit at the same time as your flights — or even before. During peak pilgrimage periods like Pitrupaksha and Mahalaya Amavasya, experienced pandits who serve English-speaking overseas pilgrims get fully booked weeks in advance. Prayag Pandits accepts advance bookings and will confirm your ritual schedule based on your arrival date and the relevant tithi. Contact us as soon as you have your travel dates confirmed.
How much does a round-trip flight from Malaysia to Varanasi cost in 2026?
Round-trip economy fares start from approximately MYR 1,350 (₹28,000) during off-peak months like April, May, and November. During peak season (December to February) and the Pitrupaksha period (September–October), expect to pay MYR 2,900 or more for a round trip. Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for pilgrimage-season travel to secure the best available fares.
Can Prayag Pandits arrange rituals during Pitrupaksha?
Yes. We specialize in Pitrupaksha services at Prayagraj, Gaya, Varanasi, and Haridwar. During Pitrupaksha — the 16-day ancestral observance period — demand for qualified pandits is extremely high and the pilgrimage sites are most crowded, making the risk of encountering unauthorized operators highest. Booking with Prayag Pandits in advance of Pitrupaksha is strongly recommended to secure your preferred date and location.
Can I perform Pind Daan at more than one city for the same ancestor?
Yes, and in fact this is highly recommended in the Hindu scriptural tradition. The Garuda Purana and Gaya Mahatmya both describe performing Pind Daan at multiple tirthas as multiplying the merit of the ritual. Many families choose to perform Pind Daan at Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Gaya within the same Pitrupaksha period — our 3-in-1 package at ₹21,000 is designed specifically for this purpose. There is no limit on how many tirthas can be included.
What is the significance of Varanasi compared to Gaya and Prayagraj for Pind Daan?
All three are supreme Tirthas for ancestral rites. Gaya (Bodhgaya area) is associated with the final liberation (moksha) of the soul through the Vishnupada ritual. Prayagraj (Triveni Sangam) is considered the king of all Tirthas and is particularly potent during Pitrupaksha. Varanasi is associated with Shiva's Taraka Mantra and is especially recommended when combined with Asthi Visarjan and for ancestors who died in inauspicious circumstances. Many families perform rites at all three Tirthas during a single pilgrimage.
How often should Pind Daan be performed in Varanasi?
At minimum, annual observance during Pitrupaksha is strongly recommended. Many families also perform Pind Daan on the death anniversary (tithi) of each ancestor and on Amavasya (new moon) days. Those with specific Pitru Dosha concerns may be advised by a learned pandit to perform the rites more frequently — monthly for a period, or at multiple Tirthas such as both Varanasi and Gaya.
How many times should Pind Daan in Varanasi be performed?
The scriptures recommend performing Pind Daan annually on the death anniversary (punyatithi) and especially during Pitrupaksha (the 15-day ancestral fortnight). For ancestors who died in difficult circumstances or whose souls are believed to be troubled, more frequent Pind Daan may be recommended — such as on every Amavasya for a year following the death. Our pandits can advise based on your specific family situation.
What is the best time of year to perform Pind Daan in Varanasi?
While Pind Daan can be performed any day at Varanasi, the most potent periods are: Pitrupaksha (Sep 26 – Oct 10 in 2026), any Amavasya (new moon day), and the death anniversary tithi of the ancestor. The morning hours from sunrise to approximately 10 AM are the most auspicious time of day.
Can I arrange Pind Daan in Varanasi through Prayag Pandits?
Yes. Prayag Pandits arranges complete Pind Daan ceremonies in Varanasi through our network of verified, ghat-affiliated pandits. The service includes the full ritual at an appropriate Varanasi ghat (Raja Ghat or Pishachmocha Tirth), all ritual materials, Sanskrit mantras and ancestral invocations, and optional video documentation. We recommend booking at least one week in advance, and two to three weeks in advance during Pitrupaksha. Contact our team to arrange the details.
