In This Article
Families living abroad can have ancestral rites performed at Varanasi either by travelling for two or three days, or by having our pandits perform them in your name while you join by video. Both are valid and the sankalpa names your gotra either way. In-person starts at ₹5,355 and remote at ₹7,100. Our Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi page has the packages.
Which rite does your family need
- Asthi Visarjan. Immersion of ashes in the Ganga, from a boat at midstream. This is the rite Varanasi is known for.
- Pind Daan. Offering of pinda to named ancestors. Can be performed without ashes and years later.
- Tarpan. The water libation, performed alone or alongside the above.
Having the rite performed without travelling
Remote seva is not a recording of somebody else’s ceremony. The pandit performs the full vidhi at the Varanasi ghats, names your ancestors in the sankalpa, and a pratinidhi stands in for the family where the rite needs a hand to perform it. You join by video call or receive the recording and photographs afterwards.
| Seva | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Online Asthi Visarjan | ₹7,100 | Immersion at the ghat, video and photographs |
| Online Pind Daan | ₹11,000 | Pinda offered in your gotra, video and photographs |
| Prayagraj, Varanasi and Gaya | ₹21,000 | Rites at all three tirthas, arranged in order |

Sending ashes, or bringing them
For Asthi Visarjan the ashes have to reach Varanasi. Families either carry them in hand luggage on a visit, hand them to us on an earlier trip, or courier them. Airlines differ on what they require, so check with yours before travelling; the death certificate and the crematorium or cremation certificate are the usual documents, and some carriers ask for more.
If you are travelling
Varanasi airport takes direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata, and the city is on the main rail network. Families coming from abroad usually route through Delhi.
| From | Usual route |
|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur | KUL to Delhi, then a domestic flight to Varanasi |
| Singapore | SIN to Delhi or Kolkata, then onward |
| Gulf states | To Delhi, then a domestic flight |
| UK, US, Australia | To Delhi, then a domestic flight or an overnight train |
Two nights is enough for the rite without rushing it. Book the ritual date before the flights, because the pandit’s date governs the rest.
Combining Varanasi with Prayagraj or Gaya
Many families perform Asthi Visarjan at Varanasi and Pind Daan at Prayagraj or Gaya on a single journey. Prayagraj is about two hours away and Gaya about five. If that is your intention, say so at the enquiry stage so the dates and the pandits can be arranged in the right order rather than improvised once you are here.
Language and tradition
We match families with a pandit who can conduct the rite in a language the family follows and who knows the regional vidhi. The sequence is not identical everywhere, and a family observing the rite as their own tradition sets it should say so when booking.
Booking from abroad
- Message us with the departed’s name, your gotra, and what has already been done.
- Tell us whether you are travelling or want the rite performed on your behalf.
- We confirm the rite, the date, the ghat and the total in writing before any payment.
- For remote seva we send the video link; for travel, the pandit’s contact and meeting point.
- After the rite you receive the recording and photographs.
Common questions
Can relatives join from several countries?
Yes. The video link can be shared and families routinely join from three or four countries. Tell us the time zones and we will set the hour so most can attend.
Does it count if we are not present?
Yes. The rite is performed in your name and gotra by a pandit acting on your behalf, which the tradition provides for.
What if the ashes were already scattered elsewhere?
Pind Daan and tarpan can still be performed. They are offerings to the ancestors and do not require remains.
How far ahead should we book?
A few days outside season. Several weeks for Pitru Paksha, when both the ghats and the flights fill.
Arranging it from where you are
Whether you travel or not, the obligation and the rite are the same. Tell us what your family needs and we will say plainly what we can arrange and what it costs, on our Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi page or on WhatsApp.
