Is it safe for pregnant women to be outside during Surya Grahan?

Hindu tradition recommends that pregnant women stay indoors during a solar eclipse as a protective measure. The traditional rules also include avoiding sharp objects, not sleeping during the eclipse, and chanting protective mantras for the childs wellbeing. The rule about staying indoors also practically prevents accidental viewing of the eclipse without eye protection, which can cause permanent retinal damage.
