Why are onion and garlic prohibited during Pitrupaksha?

Onion and garlic are rajasic and partially tamasic in Ayurveda — they stimulate agitation and restlessness. Pitrupaksha requires a calm sattvic consciousness for ritual connection with ancestral souls. The Puranas also classify both as ritually impure, making them inappropriate for food consumed during sacred observances.
