• Puri-Patna Express (12801) — departs Bhubaneswar, reaches Gaya Junction in approximately 12-14 hours. Runs daily.
• Sambalpur-Danapur Express — via Jharsuguda, reaches Gaya in ~16 hours.
• Connecting via Howrah — Bhubaneswar to Howrah (6-7 hours by Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi), then Howrah to Gaya (4-5 hours by Rajdhani/Duronto). More options but requires a change.

Approximate fare: Sleeper Rs 400-600, 3AC Rs 1,000-1,400, 2AC Rs 1,800-2,500.

By Flight: Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport has connections to Gaya Airport (Bodhgaya) via Kolkata or Delhi. Direct flights are seasonal. Flight time via Kolkata: ~3 hours total. Fare: Rs 4,000-8,000 one way.

By Road: Bhubaneswar to Gaya is approximately 630 km via NH-16 and NH-19. Driving time: 11-13 hours. Not recommended for elderly pilgrims due to road conditions through Jharkhand.

Puri to Gaya

Puri is approximately 640 km from Gaya. The Puri-Patna Express (12801) is the most convenient direct train, departing Puri and stopping at Bhubaneswar before reaching Gaya Junction. Travel time from Puri: ~14 hours.

Many Odia families combine their Puri Jagannath darshan with the Gaya Pind Daan trip, spending 2-3 days in Puri first and then continuing to Gaya.

Cuttack and Rourkela to Gaya

From Cuttack: Same trains as Bhubaneswar (Cuttack is the next major station). Add 30-45 minutes to journey time.

From Rourkela: The Rourkela-Howrah Ispat Express connects to Gaya via Chakradharpur and Dhanbad. Alternatively, take any train to Ranchi (3 hours), then Ranchi to Gaya (4-5 hours by bus or train).

What to Carry from Odisha

When traveling from Odisha for Pind Daan, bring these items:

• New white dhoti and gamcha for the person performing the ritual
• Photograph of the departed (if available)
• Death certificate or date of death (for tithi calculation)

In Odia Hindu families, shraddha barsika (ଶ୍ରାଦ୍ଧ ବାର୍ଷିକ) is the annual ceremony performed on the death anniversary of the departed, calculated by tithi (lunar date), not by the English calendar date.
