    📅

Pitru Paksha 2026 runs from September 27 (Purnima Shradh) to October 11 (Sarva Pitru Amavasya). All three sacred cities — Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Gaya — fill up fast. NRI families from the USA booking in August or earlier receive priority pandit scheduling and live video confirmation.

Pind Daan, Asthi Visarjan and Shradh from the USA: Why NRI Families Call Us

Around 3.3 million Hindus live in the United States today, and every year thousands of families face the same painful reality: a parent or grandparent has passed away, the sacred rituals need to be performed, but the nearest qualified pandit who understands the correct Vedic procedure is thousands of miles from the actual tirthas. Pind Daan must be performed at specific sacred cities — Gaya, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Haridwar — where the spiritual potency of the site amplifies the ritual. No ceremony in New Jersey or California substitutes for this.

That is the practical problem Prayag Pandits has been solving since 2019. We have performed these rituals on behalf of 2,263+ families from 11+ countries, including a substantial number of Indian-American families from New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Texas, and Georgia. This guide covers everything you need to know — services available, how to coordinate across the EST/PST time zones, travel options if you choose to come in person, and pricing in US dollars.

    Services Available for USA-Based Families

We offer the full range of ancestral rites and funeral post-death rituals at all major sacred cities. You can either travel to India or have the rituals performed on your behalf with live video documentation.

    Pind Daan

Pind Daan is the core Vedic ritual for the peace and liberation of a departed soul. Rice and sesame seed offerings (pindas) are made at the river bank with Vedic mantras, allowing the soul to progress beyond the cycles of existence. The ritual holds greatest efficacy at Prayagraj (Triveni Sangam), Gaya (Vishnupad Temple), and Varanasi (Manikarnika Ghat). We offer both in-person and online Pind Daan with live video for USA families.

In-person Pind Daan pricing (INR): Starting ₹7,100 at Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gaya, and Haridwar. The 3-in-1 Online Pind Daan Package (Prayagraj + Varanasi + Gaya) is the most comprehensive option for families who cannot travel — ₹21,000 (approximately $250 USD).

    Asthi Visarjan (Ashes Immersion)

When a family member passes away in the USA, the ashes (asthi) must eventually be immersed in a sacred river — Ganga at Prayagraj, Varanasi, or Haridwar being the most auspicious. There is no time limit imposed by scripture, so families have the ashes immersed whenever they can arrange a visit or have our team perform it via our online Asthi Visarjan service.

Ashes can be brought from the USA to India in checked baggage. US Customs has no restriction on carrying human cremated remains out of the country. Indian Customs allows the import of cremated remains for religious purposes. We recommend carrying a death certificate and cremation certificate to avoid any queries at immigration. Our Online Asthi Visarjan in Prayagraj is priced at ₹9,999 (approximately $119 USD).

    Shradh and Tarpan

Shradh is an annual ceremony performed during Pitru Paksha — the 16-day period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to ancestral worship. Tarpan is the offering of water mixed with sesame seeds and barley, performed at the river bank. Both rituals are performed on behalf of USA families through our online Tarpan service for NRIs. Shradh at Prayagraj starts at ₹7,100 (approximately $85 USD); Tarpan in Prayagraj starts at ₹5,100 (approximately $61 USD).

Online vs In-Person: Which Option is Right for You?

This is the question almost every US-based family asks. The honest answer is that both are spiritually valid. The key difference is the personal experience of being present at the tirtha versus the convenience of having trained pandits perform it on your behalf while you watch via video call. The Vedic tradition has always acknowledged that proxy rituals (performed by a qualified priest on behalf of the yajaman) are fully valid when the yajaman cannot be physically present.

Time zoneEarly morning IST = evening USA timeYou are in IST

For a first-time Pind Daan — especially for a parent or grandparent — many families prefer to travel. The act of being at Gaya or Triveni Sangam, placing the pinda with your own hands, carries a weight of personal closure that a video call cannot fully replicate. For annual Pitru Paksha Tarpan or recurring Shradh, the online service is extremely practical and widely used by Indian-American families.

    Coordinating Across Time Zones
New York (EST) is 10.5 hours behind IST. Los Angeles (PST) is 13.5 hours behind IST. Our pandits perform morning rituals between 6 AM and 10 AM IST — which is 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM the previous night in New York, or 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM in Los Angeles. Evening video calls work well for most USA families. We send you a WhatsApp reminder 30 minutes before the ritual begins.

Travel Guide: Coming to India from the USA for Pilgrimage

Flights from the USA to Prayagraj and Varanasi

There are no direct flights from US cities to Prayagraj (IXD) or Varanasi (VNS). The practical routing is a nonstop to Delhi (DEL) or Mumbai (BOM), followed by a domestic connection or train. Here are the typical routes:

    • New York/Newark (JFK/EWR) → DEL: Air India flies nonstop JFK-DEL in approximately 14–15 hours. United also operates this route. Delhi to Prayagraj is 6 hours by train (Prayagraj Express) or 1.5 hours by flight (IndiGo, Air India).
    • Chicago (ORD) → DEL: Air India nonstop, approximately 14–15 hours. Connect to Varanasi by IndiGo or SpiceJet (1.5 hrs) or by Vande Bharat Express train (about 8 hrs).
    • San Francisco (SFO) → DEL or BOM: Air India and United operate this route. From SFO, expect 16–17 hours to Delhi. SFO to Mumbai via Singapore (SIN) on Singapore Airlines is another good option.
    • Los Angeles (LAX) → DEL: Air India nonstop, approximately 17 hours. Alternatively, LAX via Tokyo (NRT) on ANA or via Singapore.
    • Houston (IAH) → DEL: One-stop via EWR or CDG, total travel time 18–22 hours.

Approximate round-trip airfare (economy class, booked 3–4 months ahead): $700–$1,200 USD from East Coast cities; $900–$1,500 USD from West Coast.

    Visa Requirements for USA-Based NRIs

Most Indian-origin families in the USA hold an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card, which grants lifelong visa-free entry to India with no requirement to register. If you hold a US passport without OCI, you will need a tourist e-Visa — apply on indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 business days before travel. The standard 10-year multiple-entry tourist visa is available for US citizens and is straightforward to obtain.

Best Time to Visit for Pitru Paksha Rituals

Pitru Paksha 2026 falls from September 27 to October 11. This is the peak season for ancestral rites at all sacred cities. Book your travel by July 2026 for best flight prices. Hotels in Gaya, Prayagraj, and Varanasi also book up during Pitru Paksha — we can recommend trusted accommodation options when you book with us. If you are specifically coming for Pind Daan but not necessarily during Pitru Paksha, any day of the year is valid; Gaya and Prayagraj accept pilgrims year-round.

    Pricing in US Dollars (USD)

All prices below are calculated at 1 USD = 84 INR (approximate; actual rate varies). We collect payment in INR via bank transfer, UPI, or international wire. Many US families pay via Wise (TransferWise) or direct SWIFT transfer.

The Four Sacred Cities: Where Your Ancestors’ Rites Are Performed

    Prayagraj — Triveni Sangam

Prayagraj is the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati — one of the most sacred spots in all of Hinduism. The scriptures call it Tirthraj, the king of all pilgrimages. Pind Daan and Asthi Visarjan performed here are believed to grant moksha (liberation) to the departed soul. Learn more about Pind Daan at Prayagraj.

Varanasi — Kashi, the City of Shiva

Varanasi is perhaps the holiest city in the Hindu world. Lord Shiva himself is said to whisper the Taraka mantra into the ears of the dying here, granting liberation. The ghats of Varanasi — particularly Manikarnika and Assi — have witnessed Pind Daan and Asthi Visarjan ceremonies for thousands of years. Read about Asthi Visarjan rituals in India’s sacred cities.

Gaya — Where Vishnu Himself Receives the Pindas

Gaya in Bihar is specifically mentioned in the Garuda Purana and Vayu Purana as the place where Pind Daan carries the greatest efficacy for freeing ancestors from suffering. The Vishnupad Temple — where Lord Vishnu’s footprint is enshrined — is at the centre of the ritual. The Falgu River and Akshaya Vat (immortal banyan tree) are also part of the pilgrimage. Learn more about Pind Daan at Gaya.

Haridwar — Gateway to the Himalayas

Haridwar, where the Ganga descends from the mountains to the plains, is the fourth major site for ancestral rites. Har ki Pauri — the sacred stairway where the Ganga flows — is where Tarpan, Pind Daan, and Asthi Visarjan are performed. Haridwar is easily accessible from Delhi (approximately 220 km, 4–5 hours by road or train).

How to Book: A Step-by-Step Guide for US Families

    1. WhatsApp us at +91 77540 97777 — Send a message with the name of the departed, the ritual required (Pind Daan / Asthi Visarjan / Shradh / Tarpan), and your preferred city. We respond within 2–4 hours during business hours IST (8 AM–8 PM).
    2. Confirm the date and gotra details — We need the gotra (ancestral lineage), the name of the departed, date of passing, and the family’s pind daan history if known. If you do not know the gotra, we can use a universal procedure (saamaanya vidhi).
    3. Make payment — Via bank transfer to our Indian account, Wise (TransferWise), or PayPal (subject to availability). We send a payment confirmation and receipt on WhatsApp.
    4. Join the video call on the scheduled day — We send a WhatsApp video call invitation. The ritual typically runs 45–90 minutes depending on the ceremony. You can participate by saying the sankalpa (intention) from your US location.
    5. Receive documentation — We send photos and a video recording of the complete ritual within 24 hours of completion, along with a PDF certificate of the ritual performed.

Why 2,263+ Families Have Chosen Prayag Pandits

Since 2019, Prayag Pandits has been the trusted partner for NRI families seeking authentic ancestral rites. We operate as M/S Prayag Samagam, a registered entity with GST number 09AZAPK2937R1ZR, based in Prayagraj. This is not an aggregator or booking platform — we are practising pandits with generational knowledge of the correct ritual procedures.

Several things distinguish our service for US-based families specifically:

    • English communication: All coordination happens in clear English. No language barrier for families who were born or raised in the USA.
    • Verified credentials: Our lead pandits are trained in the Vedic tradition with expertise in the specific ritual requirements for different gotras and family traditions.
    • Video documentation: Every online ritual is recorded. We understand that US families need this evidence — for personal peace of mind, and sometimes for family members back in India who want to know the ritual was performed correctly.
    • Flexibility: We work with families who have not performed Pind Daan for years (or decades) after a parent’s passing. There is no judgement — the ritual can still be performed with appropriate supplementary prayers.
    • Transparent pricing: What you see is what you pay. No hidden charges, no last-minute additions at the ghat.

    अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Can I do Pind Daan from the USA without traveling to India?

Yes. Our online Pind Daan service is performed by qualified pandits at the sacred tirtha — Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gaya, or Haridwar — while you participate via live WhatsApp video call from the USA. The ritual is fully valid under Vedic tradition when the yajaman (patron) cannot be physically present. We have performed this service for hundreds of US-based families.

How do I send ashes (asthi) from the USA to India for immersion?

You have two options. First, carry the ashes yourself on your flight — US Customs allows taking cremated remains out of the country, and Indian Customs allows importing them for religious purposes. Carry the death certificate and cremation certificate. Second, if you cannot travel, you can ship them internationally — however, we recommend the first option. Alternatively, our Online Asthi Visarjan service does not require the physical ashes to be at the venue; the ritual is performed symbolically with the intent of the family, which is valid per the tradition.

What is the cost of Pind Daan from USA in dollars?

Online Pind Daan at Prayagraj or Varanasi starts at ₹7,100 (approximately $85 USD at 84 INR per dollar). The 3-in-1 package covering Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Gaya is ₹21,000 (approximately $250 USD). For in-person services during a visit to India, prices are the same in INR — the exchange rate works strongly in your favor. Payment is accepted via Wise, SWIFT bank transfer, or other methods.

What time do the rituals happen in India compared to USA time?

Rituals are performed in the morning, typically between 6 AM and 10 AM IST. EST (New York) is 10.5 hours behind IST during Indian Standard Time year-round — so 6 AM IST is 7:30 PM EST the previous day. PST (Los Angeles) is 13.5 hours behind, so 6 AM IST is 4:30 PM PST the previous day. Most US families join the video call in the late evening (EST) or afternoon/early evening (PST), which is quite convenient.

How long before Pitru Paksha should I book?

We recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks before Pitru Paksha begins (September 27, 2026). During Pitru Paksha, pandit availability fills up quickly, especially at Gaya and Prayagraj. Families who book in July or August receive first-priority scheduling. If you are planning to travel to India for Pitru Paksha, book flights by June for the best economy fares from US airports.

What information do I need to provide before the ritual?

We need: (1) Name of the departed person, (2) Gotra (ancestral lineage) — if unknown, we can use saamaanya vidhi, (3) Date of passing (approximate is fine), (4) Relation to the deceased, (5) Your name and contact number. For Pind Daan, we also ask whether any Pind Daan has been performed previously for this individual, and at which location. This helps us choose the correct ritual procedure.

Is the online ritual spiritually as valid as being present in person?

The Vedic tradition has always recognized that the sankalpa — the sacred intention and resolve of the yajaman — is the most important element of any ritual. When a qualified pandit performs the ritual correctly at the sacred tirtha and the yajaman participates via voice (even from thousands of miles away), the ritual is fully valid. The Garuda Purana and other texts acknowledge proxy performance. Thousands of families in the diaspora rely on this service, and our pandits maintain the highest standards of Vedic procedure regardless of whether you are physically present.
