Pind Daan & Shradh

What is Sannihit Sarovar and why is it special for Pind Daan?

Answered by ·

Sannihit Sarovar is a sacred water reservoir in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana, believed to be the spot where seven sacred streams of the ancient Sarasvati River converge underground. The Vamana Purana states that Lord Vishnu resides permanently in the waters of Sannihit Sarovar, making it one of the rare tirthas with a direct divine presence specifically favourable for ancestral offerings.

Bathing in Sannihit Sarovar during Pitrupaksha is believed to offer immediate peace to wandering and unsettled ancestral souls. The surrounding ghats have marble and red stone platforms specifically constructed for Shradh, Pind Daan, and Tarpan ceremonies. During Pitrupaksha and on Amavasya days, hundreds of families gather here with local Teerth Purohits to perform ancestral rites.

The sarovar is also considered particularly powerful during solar eclipses — a tradition rooted in the Mahabharata, which associates Kurukshetra with cosmic events and their amplifying effect on ritual merit.
