इस अनुष्ठान के बारे में

There is a moment in every family's life when the heart turns toward those who came before — the ancestors whose love, sacrifice, and prayers shaped the world we live in. Shradh Poojan is that sacred moment, performed with full devotion on the banks of the holy Ganga at Garh Ganga, Garhmukteshwar. When you book this service with Prayag Pandits, a learned pandit performs the complete Shradh ceremony at Brij Ghat on your behalf, ensuring your pitrus receive the offerings, water, and prayers that tradition has carried forward for thousands of years.

Garhmukteshwar is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in northern India — ancient, sacred, and remarkably close to Delhi. For families who feel the call to honour their ancestors but cannot make the long journey to Haridwar, Prayagraj, or Gaya, Garh Ganga offers the same spiritual completeness in a tirtha that the scriptures themselves have praised.

The Spiritual Significance of Garhmukteshwar — Garh Ganga

Garhmukteshwar, known to devotees simply as Garh Ganga, sits on the western banks of the Ganga in the Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh. The town's name itself is deeply significant — Garh referring to the ancient fort, and Mukteshwar meaning the Lord who grants liberation (mukti). The presiding deity is Lord Shiva in the form of Mukteshwarnath, and the Ganga here is believed to carry the same purifying power as she does at Haridwar, just a few hours upstream.

The Mahabharata mentions Garhmukteshwar as a tirtha of great merit. Ancient texts describe it as a place where ancestral rites performed on the banks of the Ganga carry special weight — the soul of the departed is said to find ease and onward movement when Shradh is performed here with sincerity. The Karthik Purnima fair that takes place here each year draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in Uttar Pradesh.

Brij Ghat is the main ghat at Garhmukteshwar, a peaceful stretch of stone steps leading down to the river. This is where our pandits perform all ancestral rites — Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Shradh Poojan. The atmosphere here is unhurried and genuinely devotional, quite different from the crowds of larger pilgrimage cities. Families often tell us it feels more intimate, more personal — a place where the ceremony can be conducted with full attention and care.

What Is Shradh Poojan and Why Does It Matter

Shradh (also written as Shraddha, from the Sanskrit root meaning faith and sincerity) is the Vedic ritual of honouring departed ancestors — the pitrus. It is not merely a formality. The scriptures, particularly the Garuda Purana and Vishnu Purana, speak at length about the obligation every householder carries toward those who gave them life and legacy.

The ritual involves offering pinda (balls of cooked rice and sesame), pouring tarpan (water mixed with sesame and kusha grass) to the departed, and reciting specific Vedic mantras that are believed to carry the essence of the offering across the planes of existence to reach the pitrus wherever they now reside.

The Pitru Paksha fortnight (the 16-day lunar period in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada) is the most auspicious time for Shradh. However, the scriptures also permit — and in some cases recommend — Shradh on the death anniversary (Mahalaya), on Amavasya (new moon day), and at sacred tirthas at any time of year. Performing Shradh at a Ganga tirtha like Garhmukteshwar is considered especially meritorious regardless of the calendar date.

For a comprehensive understanding of the philosophy and types of Shradh, we recommend reading our detailed article on Shradh Karm — a deep dive into its types, rituals, and importance in Hinduism.

What Is Included in This Package

  • Qualified Pandit Ji — A trained and experienced priest who specialises in ancestral rites, well-versed in the correct Vedic procedure for Shradh Poojan
  • Complete Puja Samagri — All ritual materials including pinda ingredients (cooked rice, black sesame, barley, kusha grass), flowers, incense, lamps, and sacred thread
  • Tarpan — Water offering to the pitrus performed in the Ganga at Brij Ghat
  • Pind Daan — Offering of pindas with the appropriate mantras for each ancestral generation (up to three generations on the father's side and three on the mother's side)
  • Sankalp — The formal ritual declaration made in your name and your family's name, invoking your gotra (lineage) and the names of the departed
  • Brahman Bhojan arrangement — The pandit makes arrangements for offering food to a Brahmin as required by the Shradh tradition (included in the service)
  • Local guidance — Our team will assist with directions to Brij Ghat, ghat access, and any queries you have on the day

How the Ceremony Is Performed — Step by Step

Step 1: Booking and Sankalp Details

When you place your order, we will contact you within 24 hours to gather the necessary details: the name of the departed, their relationship to you, your gotra (lineage name), and your preferred date. If you are unsure of the gotra, our pandit will guide you — it is not an obstacle to proceeding with the ceremony.

Step 2: Arrival at Brij Ghat

On the day of the ceremony, our pandit arrives at Brij Ghat at Garhmukteshwar with all the puja materials. If you are attending in person, our team will meet you at the ghat and escort you to the designated puja area. Garhmukteshwar is approximately 80-90 km from Delhi, about 2 to 2.5 hours by road — very accessible for families based in the Delhi NCR region.

Step 3: Sankalp — The Sacred Intention

The ceremony opens with the Sankalp, in which the pandit formally announces the purpose of the puja: your name, your gotra, the names of the departed, and the intention that this Shradh be performed for their peace and liberation. This is the most important part — it formally connects the ritual to your family and lineage.

Step 4: Tarpan

Standing at the edge of the Ganga, the pandit (and you, if present) offers tarpan — cupped hands of Ganga water mixed with black sesame, barley, and kusha grass — to each departed ancestor by name. The mantras recited during tarpan are drawn from the Rigveda and are believed to nourish and comfort the souls of the departed.

Step 5: Pind Daan

Pindas — small balls of cooked rice mixed with sesame, honey, and ghee — are prepared and offered one by one for each ancestral generation. The pandit recites specific mantras for each pinda, invoking the name and lineage of the departed. The pindas are then immersed in the Ganga.

Step 6: Brahman Bhojan and Dakshina

The Shradh tradition requires that food be offered to a Brahmin as a representative of the pitrus. The pandit arranges this as part of the service. A nominal dakshina (offering) is also made on your behalf.

Step 7: Completion and Prasad

The ceremony closes with prayers for the peace (shanti) of the departed soul and the wellbeing of your family.

Who Should Book This Service

This Shradh Poojan package is suitable for any family that wishes to perform their ancestral rites in a traditional, correct, and spiritually complete manner. In particular, this service is well suited for:

  • Families based in Delhi NCR — Garhmukteshwar is the closest major Ganga tirtha, only 2-2.5 hours from Delhi by road. There is no need to take a multi-day trip when this sacred site is so accessible.
  • Those who missed Pitru Paksha — Shradh can be performed at any time of year at a Ganga tirtha. If your family was unable to perform the rites during the Pitru Paksha fortnight, this is a perfectly valid option.
  • Annual Shradh on death anniversaries — Many families perform Shradh each year on the tithi (lunar date) of the ancestor's passing. Garh Ganga is an excellent location for this annual observance.
  • Those seeking an alternative to Haridwar — Haridwar and Prayagraj are the most famous locations for ancestral rites, but they involve longer travel. Garhmukteshwar offers the same Ganga and the same spiritual weight, with far less distance to cover.
  • Families unable to perform rituals themselves — If you do not have access to a knowledgeable pandit, or if you are uncertain of the correct procedure, our team handles everything correctly from start to finish.

We also offer the Asthi Visarjan service at Garh Ganga for families who wish to immerse the sacred ashes of a departed loved one in the Ganga at Garhmukteshwar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to travel to Garhmukteshwar for this service?

No. You can book this service remotely and our pandit will perform the complete Shradh ceremony at Brij Ghat on your behalf. You will be asked to provide the details of the departed (name, gotra, relationship), and we will carry out the ritual in your name. However, if you wish to attend in person, we warmly welcome that and will coordinate your visit.

Is Shradh at Garhmukteshwar spiritually equivalent to Shradh at Haridwar?

Yes. The scriptures do not rank Ganga tirthas against one another. The Ganga at Garhmukteshwar is the same sacred river that flows through Haridwar, and the ancestral rites performed here carry the same spiritual merit. The town's association with Lord Mukteshwarnath and its mention in the Mahabharata make it an especially blessed location for such rites.

Can I perform Shradh at Garhmukteshwar on any day, or only during Pitru Paksha?

Shradh can be performed at a Ganga tirtha on any day of the year. The Pitru Paksha fortnight is the most widely observed period, but the scriptures also recommend Shradh on the departed ancestor's death anniversary (tithi), on Amavasya (new moon), and at any point when a family feels the need to perform the rites. Our pandits are available throughout the year.

What details do I need to provide when booking?

You will need to share: the name of the departed person, their relationship to you (father, mother, grandfather, etc.), your gotra (family lineage name), and your preferred date for the ceremony. If you do not know your gotra, please let us know — our pandit will guide you through a brief process to determine the correct lineage to use in the sankalp.

Will I receive any confirmation or documentation after the ceremony?

Yes. After the ceremony is complete, our team will share photographs of the ritual being performed and send sacred prasad to your address. You will have full confirmation that the rites were performed correctly and completely in your family's name.
