Prayag Pandits performs asthi visarjan, pind daan and shradh on the Ganga at Varanasi, with the ghat and the boat arranged. Tell us on WhatsApp what you need and which day you arrive, and a pandit will say which ghat and what time — the hour matters more here than families expect.

Varanasi’s ghats run some six kilometres along the west bank, and what happens on them changes completely through the day — bathing before dawn, rites through the morning, aarti at dusk, cremation around the clock at two of them. This page is a practical guide to which ghat does what, and when to be where.

The ghats that matter, and what each is for

The principal ghats, and what you would go to each for
GhatBest forWhat to know
DashashwamedhGanga AartiThe main ghat and the evening aarti everybody comes for. Crowded from late afternoon; arrive an hour early or watch from a boat
AssiMorning calmThe southern end. Subah-e-Banaras at dawn, far quieter than Dashashwamedh, and the easier choice with children or elderly relatives
ManikarnikaCremationBurning continuously. Not a sightseeing stop — photography is intrusive and resented, and families are grieving a few metres away
HarishchandraCremationThe second cremation ghat, smaller and older. The same restraint applies
PanchgangaAncestral ritesWhere five streams are held to meet. Tarpan and pind daan are performed here
KedarShiva worshipSouth of the centre, with its own temple and a distinctly local congregation
Pishach MochanNarayan BaliNot on the river but a kund inland — the site specifically associated with releasing trapped souls
The hour decides the experience
Before sunrise the ghats belong to people bathing and to the boats going out to see the light hit the bank — this is the hour worth setting an alarm for, and Assi is better for it than Dashashwamedh. Mid-morning is when ancestral rites are performed and when a pandit can actually give you time. Afternoons are hot and empty. From about five the whole southern stretch fills for the aarti. If you are performing a rite and also want to see the aarti, do the rite in the morning — trying to do both after four in the afternoon does not work.

What is performed here

Varanasi’s standing in the ancestral rites comes from the Kashi Khanda’s claim that dying or being cremated here grants liberation. In practice families come for three things: asthi visarjan, immersing ashes on the Ganga, which is the most common; pind daan, often combined with the immersion on the same visit; and Narayan Bali at Pishach Mochan where a death was unnatural.

What we perform at Varanasi, and what it costs
RiteFromWhere
Asthi visarjan₹5,100On the Ganga, with the boat. First, where the ashes are outstanding
Pind daan₹7,100At the ghats, usually combined with the immersion
Shradh₹10,999The fuller ceremony with brahmin bhoj
Narayan Bali₹25,000At Pishach Mochan. Only where a death was unnatural
At the cremation ghats, put the camera away
Manikarnika and Harishchandra are not attractions. People are cremating their parents in the open a few metres from where visitors stand, and photographing it is an intrusion they are in no position to refuse. Guides will offer to take you closer and some will ask for a “donation to the wood fund” that goes nowhere — both are routine and both should be declined. Stand back, watch quietly if you want to, and do not photograph. If you are there to perform a rite rather than to look, your pandit will take you to the right place.

Practical notes

  • Boats are the best way to see the ghats and the only way to see them all. Agree the price and the duration before stepping in; sunrise and aarti hour cost more, and that is normal rather than a swindle.
  • The lanes behind the ghats are a maze and no vehicle enters them. Expect to walk the last stretch with your luggage.
  • Steps are steep and often wet. Worth knowing before bringing an elderly relative; some ghats are much easier than others and we will tell you which.
  • During monsoon the lower steps are underwater and the river runs fast. Rites continue, but from higher up, and immersion needs more care.
