Manglik dosha — also called mangal dosha, and kuja dosham in the south — is the condition in Vedic astrology where Mars occupies the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house of a birth chart. It is checked during horoscope matching before marriage, and astrologers estimate that something between a third and a half of all charts carry it. It is common, not rare.

Before anything else, the thing most people arrive here afraid of: the classical texts do not say that a manglik’s spouse will die. They speak in tendencies, not certainties, and they set out a long list of conditions under which the dosha is considered cancelled outright. Millions of manglik people are many years into settled marriages. This page covers what the placement actually indicates, which houses matter and why, when it is cancelled, what the remedies are, and what it costs to have the puja performed.

What manglik dosha is

Mars in Vedic astrology governs energy, assertion, courage and conflict. When it sits in one of the six houses connected with marriage and domestic life, the tradition holds that its intensity bears on the marriage — typically through temperament and friction rather than through catastrophe.

What a chart actually shows depends on far more than the house Mars sits in: the sign it occupies, its strength, which planets aspect it, and what the Navamsha chart says. Two people can both be “manglik” and have entirely different readings. That is why a one-line verdict from a matching app means very little, and why the cancellation rules below matter as much as the dosha itself.

The six houses, and what each one indicates

First house — the self

Mars here charges the personality with drive and impulsiveness. The native tends to be headstrong, and can dominate a relationship without noticing. This placement is not harmful in itself; it carries an intensity that needs either matching or conscious channelling.

Second house — speech, family, money

Included in the manglik calculation by some traditions and not others — astrologers genuinely differ on this one. An afflicted Mars here can make the native sharp-tongued in argument and prone to disagreements over money within the household.

Fourth house — home and domestic peace

Associated with friction at home and tension between a spouse and the native’s mother. It also tends toward early marriage, and early marriages face more turbulence for the ordinary reason that the people in them are younger.

Seventh house — partnership

The most directly relevant placement, since the seventh house is the house of the spouse. Associated with ego clashes and power struggles, and with relationships that begin intensely and then struggle with daily compatibility.

Eighth house — longevity and in-laws

The placement that generates most of the fear attached to this subject. What the texts describe is a raised risk factor when the rest of the chart is weak and no benefic planet mitigates it — not a certainty, and not a verdict that can be read from the placement alone.

Twelfth house — expenditure and privacy

Associated with losses, unplanned expenditure, and discord in the private life of the couple.

For how the chart is read as a whole, see the guide to the four types of kundali.

What this page will not tell you
We will not tell you that your marriage is doomed, that your partner is in danger, or that a manglik person is aggressive or difficult by birth. Those claims circulate widely, they are not what the classical texts say, and they do a great deal of harm to people who are simply trying to get married. If an astrologer leads with them, get a second reading.

Does manglik dosha end at 28?

This is the question we are asked most, and the honest answer is that astrologers disagree.

The belief rests on graha pakva avastha, planetary maturity, under which each planet is held to come into its mature expression at a particular age — around 28 for Mars. On that reading, the dosha’s force diminishes from roughly the twenty-eighth or twenty-ninth year.

Many practising astrologers reject the stronger form of this. Their position is that a natal placement does not disappear with age: Mars is where it is for life, and what maturity changes is how its energy expresses, not whether the placement exists. On that reading the intensity softens; the dosha does not cancel.

So treat 28 as a reason to have the chart read again, not as a date on which the matter settles itself. If you are being told that turning 29 has resolved the question and no further checking is needed, that is a stronger claim than the tradition supports. The cancellation rules below are firmer ground, and they apply at any age.

When the dosha is cancelled

Vedic astrology sets out conditions — bhanga, cancellation — under which the dosha is considered neutralised or substantially weakened. These are the most important paragraphs on this page for anyone who has just been told they are manglik, because one of them may already apply to you.

  • Mars in its own sign — in Aries or Scorpio, Mars is strong and well placed, and works constructively rather than destructively.
  • Mars exalted in Capricorn — exalted Mars carries disciplined energy rather than chaotic energy, and the dosha arising from it is held to be far milder.
  • Jupiter aspecting Mars — by the 5th, 7th or 9th aspect. Jupiter’s wisdom and expansion temper Mars. One of the most commonly cited cancellations.
  • Venus aspecting or conjoined with Mars — Venus governs the harmony and compromise a marriage runs on, and softens Mars considerably.
  • Mars in the first house in Aries or Scorpio — its own lagna, where the placement is strong rather than afflicted.
  • Both charts manglik — where both partners carry the dosha, the tradition holds it cancels between them.

Double manglik dosha — what it means and what it does not

Double manglik dosha, or dwi-manglik, is when Mars occupies one of the six houses in both the lagna chart and the Navamsha — the divisional chart used for marriage. Some astrologers also use the term when it appears in both the moon chart and the birth chart. Since the Navamsha is one of the most important charts for reading the quality of a marriage, Mars afflicted in both is taken seriously.

It is not a sentence on the marriage. The cancellation rules above apply here too, often with more weight, and an experienced astrologer reads the whole Navamsha rather than the Mars position alone before saying anything.

Common misconceptions

“Every manglik will lose their spouse.” The most damaging of them, and not supported by classical astrology in the absolute terms it is usually repeated. The texts speak in probabilities. Mars in the eighth house raises certain risk factors when the chart is otherwise weak and nothing mitigates it. It does not mean every person with that placement will be widowed, and millions are not.

“A manglik can never marry a non-manglik.” A popular belief rather than a rule. Where a cancellation applies — a strong Jupiter aspect, a Venus conjunction, exaltation — an astrologer may declare the dosha cancelled, and the marriage proceeds without Kumbh Vivah. Context decides it, not a single placement.

“It only matters for girls.” In many families the concern is applied far more strictly to daughters. That is a cultural bias, not an astrological rule — the classical texts apply the same principles to both.

“Kumbh Vivah removes it permanently.” Kumbh Vivah is a traditional remedial rite, not an erasure of the chart. It is widely practised and widely valued; it is not a guarantee, and nobody should present it as one.

Remedies

These are the practices the tradition prescribes. They are offered as observance, not as a transaction with a guaranteed result.

  • Tuesday observance — fasting on Tuesday, the day of Mars, and visiting a Navagraha or Hanuman temple.
  • Mantra — the Navagraha mantra or the Mangal mantra, and the Hanuman Chalisa.
  • Mangal Shanti Puja — the direct remedial rite, performed at a Mars temple. The Mangalnath temple at Ujjain is the principal site, being held in tradition as the birthplace of Mars.
  • Kumbh Vivah — a symbolic marriage to a peepal or banana tree, or to a clay pot, performed before the wedding.
  • Daan — giving red lentils, copper or red cloth on Tuesdays.
  • Red coral — worn only on an astrologer’s specific advice, never on the strength of a web page. A wrongly prescribed gemstone is worse than none.
Have the chart read before you buy anything
A proper reading may find that a cancellation already applies to you, in which case no remedy is needed at all. That is a real outcome and our pandits do say it when it is the case. Send the birth date, time and place first; decide about a puja afterwards.

Before and after marriage

Before marriage, the usual sequence is a chart reading during matching, Kumbh Vivah where the astrologer advises it, and Mangal Shanti Puja ahead of the wedding date.

After marriage — and a great many people only learn of the dosha afterwards — the remedies are the ongoing ones: Tuesday observance, mantra, daan, and the Mangal Shanti Puja, which may be performed at any time. Nothing is lost by having married first, and no additional rite is owed for not having known.

What it is called across India

The concept is the same everywhere; the name and some of the customs are not.

Tamil — செவ்வாய் தோஷம்

Sevvai Dosham, literally the flaw of Mars — sevvai is Mars, dosham the flaw. In Tamil Nadu it is a standard part of jathaka porutham, horoscope matching, and Tamil astrologers use the same six houses under Tamil planetary names.

Telugu — కుజ దోషం

Kuja Dosham, Kuja being the Telugu name for Mars. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it is assessed during patrika matching, and families consult a jyotishya pandit before a marriage is settled.

Kannada — ಕುಜ ದೋಷ

Kuja Dosha or Mangala Dosha, verified during jataka matching. Karnataka remedies commonly centre on Mangal Shanti Puja at Hanuman temples.

Bengali — মঙ্গল দোষ

Mangal Dosh, checked during patri milan in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Bengali tradition also keeps the Kumbh Vivah remedy — the symbolic marriage to a banana tree or a clay pot before the wedding.

Marathi — मंगळ दोष

The same term used across Maharashtra, checked during kundali matching. Maharashtrian families often go to Trimbakeshwar, where Narayan Nagbali is also performed — see the Trimbakeshwar guide.

Malayalam — ചൊവ്വ ദോഷം

Chovva Dosham, Chovva being Mars in Malayalam. Kerala astrologers assess it during porutham, and it is among the most closely checked factors in a Malayali marriage proposal.

Matching, and what to ask for

When a proposal is being considered, ask the astrologer three things rather than one. Which house is Mars in, and in which sign? Does any cancellation apply? What does the Navamsha show? A reading that answers only the first is not a reading.

And if two families are weighing a match, the dosha is one factor among many in guna milan. It was never meant to be the single thing a marriage is decided on, and treating it that way has caused a great deal of avoidable unhappiness.
