In This Article
The most sacred place for Asthi Visarjan in India is the Triveni Sangam at Prayagraj, where the Ganga, the Yamuna and the subterranean Saraswati meet. After it come Varanasi, Haridwar, Gaya and Garh Mukteshwar on the Ganga, and then a wider set of tirthas — Badrinath, Ujjain, Kurukshetra, Puri, Mathura, Ayodhya, Dwarka, Pushkar and Siddhpur — each with its own tradition. Any clean, flowing river is scripturally acceptable; these sites are held to confer greater merit on the departed.
This guide compares them on price, river and who each one suits. For what the rite is and how it is performed, see the complete Asthi Visarjan guide; for the tithis and muhurat, the timing guide.

Prayagraj — the Triveni Sangam
Prayagraj holds the supreme position among all Asthi Visarjan sites. At the Sangam the Ganga and the Yamuna meet visibly — one greenish, the other darker — with the Saraswati held to flow beneath. The Brahma Purana calls Prayagraj Tirtha Raja, the king of tirthas, and states that no tirtha on earth is its equal.
The immersion is performed by boat at the confluence point itself rather than from the bank, so the remains enter the deep current. The rite is done by a tirth purohit, the hereditary pandit of the tirtha, usually in the early morning. Many families perform Pind Daan here on the same visit.
Book Asthi Visarjan in Prayagraj — ₹5,100 with a private boat, or ₹3,100 for the basic rite.
Varanasi — Kashi
Varanasi is among the oldest living cities in the world and the city of Shiva. Tradition holds that those who die here receive moksha directly, and that remains immersed in the Ganga at Kashi carry liberation across lifetimes. The rite is performed at Manikarnika or Harishchandra Ghat, the two cremation ghats where the fire is said to have burned without interruption since the Puranas.
A story told at Kashi makes the point about the river’s power. A Brahmin who had neglected every rite of his life was killed by a tiger in the forest, and his soul was taken to Yamlok and punished. A vulture carried a piece of his remains away, flew over the Ganga at Kashi, and dropped it into the water. The messengers of heaven then arrived to say the soul must be released — his mortal remains had entered the Ganga, and he had attained moksha.
Book Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi — ₹5,355. The step-by-step Varanasi guide covers which ghat to choose.
Haridwar — Har Ki Pauri
Haridwar is the point at which the Ganga leaves the Himalayas for the plains, and one of the seven holy cities. Har Ki Pauri is its principal ghat, where the evening aarti draws thousands. Its proximity makes it the usual choice for families from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi NCR, and it can be done as a weekend journey from most of north India.
Book Asthi Visarjan in Haridwar — ₹7,100. Families also performing shradh rites often use Kankhal Ghat nearby.
Gaya — the Falgu
Gaya is the pre-eminent site for Pind Daan, and families performing both rites together usually choose it. The immersion is done in the Falgu, which the tradition identifies with Vishnu himself, at its confluence with the Lilajan and Mohana streams.
Both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata name Gaya. Rama is said to have performed pind daan for Dasharatha here, and the Gaya tradition holds that it was Sita who offered the pinda to her father-in-law at the Falgu while Rama and Lakshmana were away gathering materials — a version the local purohits still recount at the river.
Book Asthi Visarjan in Gaya — ₹7,100. See also the complete guide to Pind Daan at Gaya.
Garh Mukteshwar — Garh Ganga
About 100 km east of Delhi in Hapur district, Garh Mukteshwar is one of the oldest Ganga tirthas named in the Puranas. The name means the fortress city of the Lord of Liberation. For families in western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR and Haryana it is the practical choice — the rite can be completed and the family home the same day, without the travel that Haridwar or Prayagraj requires.
Book Asthi Visarjan at Garh Ganga — ₹5,100. The Garh Ganga guide covers Brij Ghat and the history of the tirtha.
Ujjain, Kurukshetra and Puri
Ujjain stands on the Shipra and is one of the four Kumbh cities. For families across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and the Deccan it is far nearer than any Ganga tirtha, and the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga draws families who want the rite done in Shiva’s own city. Book at Ujjain — ₹7,100.
Kurukshetra is the field of the Mahabharata, and the Brahma Sarovar there is a tirtha of long standing for ancestral rites, particularly at the solar eclipse. It serves families across Haryana and Punjab. Book at Kurukshetra — ₹7,100.
Puri immerses in the Mahodadhi, the sea at Swargadwar beside the Jagannath temple — Odia families have performed the rite here for generations. Book at Puri — ₹5,100. Odia families comparing Puri, Jajpur and Prayagraj should read the Odisha guide.
The other sacred places
These tirthas carry long-standing tradition for Asthi Visarjan. We do not publish a fixed package for them; tell us which you want and we will arrange a pandit.
- Badrinath — Brahma Kapal. The flat rock on the Alaknanda beside the temple, where ancestral rites are held to complete pitru karma permanently. Open only in the pilgrimage season, roughly May to November.
- Mathura and Vrindavan. On the Yamuna, in Krishna’s birthplace. Chosen by Vaishnava families and those who want the rite in Braj.
- Ayodhya. On the Sarayu, the river into which Rama is said to have taken his final departure.
- Dwarka. On the Gujarat coast where the Gomti meets the Arabian Sea, one of the four Char Dham.
- Pushkar. At the lake in Rajasthan, beside the Brahma temple.
- Siddhpur. On the Saraswati in Gujarat, the one tirtha traditionally designated for rites performed for the mother — matru shradh.
How to choose
Four questions settle it for most families. How far can you travel, and when? A nearby tirtha done within the proper window beats a distant one done late. Are you performing Pind Daan as well? If so, Gaya or Prayagraj. Does your community have a customary site? Odia families to Puri, Gujarati families to Siddhpur for a mother’s rites, Braj families to Mathura — ask the elders before deciding. Is anyone able to travel at all? If not, the rite can still be performed properly; see below.
If no one can travel
Two options exist at every tirtha we serve. In online Asthi Visarjan the pandit performs the complete vidhi at the ghat while the family joins by video call and the sankalpa is taken in the departed’s name. In Asthi Visarjan by courier the family sends the kalash by registered post and the pandit performs the immersion with the family watching live. Both end with a recording of the ceremony. The courier guide explains the packing, the documentation and the rules for sending from outside India.
